LUDHIANA: In an incident that shocked gurdwara goers on Tuesday, a granthi (Sikh priest) was caught watching clips of a porn film on his mobile phone that was hidden under the table on which he had kept the scripture.

The granthi, who managed to run away after his transgression was noticed, had allegedly been doing this for quite some time. According to sarpanch Amrik Singh of Jhar Sahab, near Ludhiana, the incident came to light in the morning when a faithful praying at the Jhar Sahab gurdwara, managed by SGPC, found granthi Gurpreet Singh ‘‘wasn’t concentrating in the prayers and was rather distracted by something else underneath the table on which the scriptures were placed’’.

‘‘I was shocked to see that the granthi was actually busy seeing pornographic clips on his cellphone that he had cleverly hidden under the table,’’ said Jasbir Singh Gill, one of those praying at the gurdwara. ‘‘I immediately called the head granthi, Jaspal Singh, and we caught the man red-handed.’’

‘‘We have registered an FIR under IPC section 295 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) against the accused after checking the porn movie clips in his mobile,’’ said Rajesh Kumar, SHO, under whose jurisdiction Jhar Sahab falls. This is the second time in recent days something like this involving a granthi has happened.

He was doing PAATH RAOL... meaning doing the paath of sggs for somone else who paid for it.
Serves the "BUYER" right too...a SIKH is supposed to do the paath HIMSELF..not BUY a ready made one...you "buy" you get ones like this one..porn+paath ??
When will we get back on the right path ??

just to play the devil's advocte:

how many of us have not had our minds wander off while in gurudwara?

Just recall if you were not:

1. thinking of the mortgage that has high rate
2. The new car you saw in the gurudwara parking lot
3. irritated by the pitch of gyani's voice
4. conscious of someone not following the "maryada" of being in gurudwara
5. making note of the suit the other lady was wearing
6. Thinking about langar

.........
there are many more

Do you consider your examples are proportionally equivalent to a granthi watching porn on a concealed mobile device while reciting Shabad Guru?

If your answer is YES, then please explain Why.

The mind has - a censor to make a decision - to allow or not to allow the thought form to be turned into a physical action.

mai ji

what i was trying to share as a point was that:

why do we consider Gyani to be a "special" person

if a person going to Gurudwara for his love of Bani and Guru can let his mind wander, consider the Gyani who is working there as an employee

this is just a symptom of the malice

today's Gurudwaras have become establishments in themselves and such incidents are bound to happen when money and structure override love of God as the basis for coming together.

Huck,

There is a huge difference between the mind wandering and actually actively encouraging it and planning it out. In law, thisd the difference between a crime of opportunity (Second Degree) and a crime with malice aforethought (First Degree). The Second Degree is certainly bad; the First Degree is much worse, even though the act may be the same.

Beyond that, I really couldn't care less that the offender was a granthi. It would be nice if granthis were all upstanding people of impeccable character; it would also be nice if we could all live together in peace and harmony. It just isn't realistic right now.

What I care mostly about was that this was done, purposely, planned in the presence of Guru ji. That level of disrespect is unconscionable. And however embarrassing it is to all of us, I'm glad this granthi was publicly exposed (no pun intended).

And I wish they'd quit calling granthis "Sikh priests".

we are in there of our own free will...so we cna wander all we want..a loss yes..but still on our own heads..
BUT this man was PAID a FEE to do a job..and this is his way of responsibility !! Even IF he was "reading" the words..his mind wasnt there...becasue wehn we reach that stage..we just dont care...a policeman who takes a bribe for doing his job..is corrupt..this man is morally corrupt as well..his actions is not the same as you or me thinking about a car in the Parking lot...and the TRUTH is that this is just the TIP of the ICEBERG...and the ICEBERG has reached immense proportions..million times bigger than the one that sank the Titanic...just this YEAR...so many of such reports have come out...another granthi doing paath had a porno magazine spread out on the SGGS...and he was flipping its pages..and not SGGS...another one puked on the SGGS becasue he was stoned...another urinated while doing ardass..he was stoned too...at a Takhat an ardassiahs mobile phone rang during ardass and he had this Raunchy number really LOUD..one hand he was holding the mike..the other was holding a paper and was on the wrong side of his chola..so the entire world had a few choice lines of this raunchy number interrupting a live ardass !! THIS is what we get when we PUT CHOLAS and kacherras on young LOUTS who are a FAILURE at everything else..and make them into INSTANT BABAS/GRANTHIS/RAGIS..and send them out to Gurdwareh...as sewadaars...RELIGION IS A BUSINESS FOR MANY...MOST NOT QUALIFIED TO DO ANYTHING WORTHWHILE..GO INTO RELIGION...

meh...might be a granthi but he's still a human.

NO one is saying hes not human..

what would you call a doctor/surgeon who is operating on a patient and watching a porno movie...or a person paid to be a security guard watches porn instead of the cctv screens,,,its all a question of responsibility. IF a Granthi wants to watch porn..he can do it on his own time...not while hes supposed to be doing paath for which he is paid..Gross and immoral negligence as welll as KHINAYAT !!
What his action means in actual fact is he doesnt give two hoots to Guru Ji..no respect,,no morals and no character. To him obviously the SGGS is just an accessory to hide his mobile...and he was so engrossed in it that he didnt even notice someone watching him watch porn !!

TO ALL those who BUY such PrePaid Paaths....99% of these are done by LONE Paathis sitting in small CUBICLES...out of Public Eye...and WHAT THEY DO in their PRIVACY is anyones guess !!!..With the state of Moral DEGRADATION..i am not going to say anything...everything goes !!:ice::ice::ice::ice::ice::ice::ice::ice::ice:

There have been arguments, that the granthi was performing only a commercial duty and not a spiritual duty.

Well even on a paid job if you are caught cheating on job you are simply sacked, no questions asked.

And in any workplace if any one is caught watching porn on office PC, action will certainly be taken against the employee.

This is part of professional decorum even if his duty is not considered as religious.
