A mob reportedly attacked the Gurdwara Nanak Darbar, Vijay Nagar, Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and set the Gurudwara on fire causing major damage. All glass windows and furniture have been destroyed in the fire that was set by the mob. The care takers of the Gurudwara were beaten badly and received injuries.
It is being reported that rising tensions after the Indian Government's approval to form the new state of Telangana have resulted in widespread disorder in the region.
According to witnesses at the scene, the attack appeared to have been thoroughly planned. DSGMC member Paramjeet Singh Rana contacted police from Delhi following which the Viskhapatnam DCP sent a Police contingent to safeguard the Gurdwara Sahib. It has been reported that a rumala sahib was burnt and the Granthi Singh Bhai Sardar Jasveer Singh managed to save the Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, although witnesses are saying it did receive minor damage. The cause of the attack has not yet been determined.
Total damage has not yet been assessed but the Police have reportedly controlled the situation now after DSGMC officials contacted the state Government asking for immediate response of police.
