Rare Guru Granth Sahib manuscripts need preservation says Dr Mohinder Singh

AMRITSAR:The rare manuscripts, documents and `Pothis’ relating compilation of Guru Granth Sahib, which are scattered in whole of India need to be preserved through digitalization technique as those are part of the rich Sikh cultural heritage. This was stated by renowned historian and Member of National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Dr.Mohinder Singh at a seminar on `Conserving Rare Guru Granth Sahib Manuscripts’ at Khalsa College here today.
During a power point presentation, Dr.Singh who has documented Birs and manuscripts from throughout India stated that `the written history’ is treasure house of the days relating the Guru’s times and later compilation of the Granth. ``We must be proud that such a vast material is available which speaks volumes about the history relating the Guru’s and compilation of the holy book’’, he stated showing pictures of the manuscripts written with Guru’s own hands and later.
He said at the places as distanced as Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, the manuscripts are placed by some devout families and individuals and concerted efforts were required to preserve those as the documents would die if not preserved. He was earlier welcomed by Khalsa College Governing Council honourary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh china, finance secretary Gunbir Singh and Principal Dr.Daljit Singh on reaching the campus.
Chhina on the occasion appreciated the efforts made by Dr.Mohinder Singh in taking up the challenging task to spot the manuscripts and conserve the same. He said Sikhism is youngest religion and we must be proud of the written history dating back to the Guru’s times. He dedicated the seminar to the proposed course to be introduced on religious studies at the Khalsa College. Gunbir Singh said Dr.Mohinder Singh was making tireless efforts to preserve the rare documents.
Dr.Daljit Singh said the teachers and the students were enriched by the lecture as Dr.Mohinder Singh gave an account of the historical evidences of the compilation of the Guru Granth Sahib. Later he visited the Sikh History Research department and was delighted on seeing the rare documents and books available in the department. He also gave valuable suggestions to conserve these rare documents at the department.
