Sat Sri Akaal everyone,

I am currently in Delhi and was curious to whether anyone knew where my best bet for aquiring a english translation of the The Guru Granth Sahib? Also has anyone been to a Gurdwara in India before? I have never seen so many Sikhs in one place before and it is very daunting! :):):)

Dear Michael - If you are in Delhi try with DGPC ( Delhi Gurduara Parbandhak Committee ) they should have office in Sheesh Ganj, Rakab Ganj and other historical Gurduaras in Delhi. Atleast they will guide you to a publisher where you can buy it.

If heading towards Punjab - then try with Punjabi University Patiala, they have publication bureau office. Or SGPC ( Shrimoni Gurduara Parbandhak Committee ) store located at all big Historical Gurduaras in Punjab.

Hope that will help you.

Thanks!

Michael ji,
I think looking at a range of translations provides a more rounded view as each translation (esp in English) has its flaws. Additionally reading around each bani also helps with understanding and there are many excellent threads looking into the bani on SPN. I'm sure Ishna ji has mentioned a less well known English translation she has enjoyed but I can't remember who it was. Recently I've been reading some of Nikky-Guninder Kaur-Singh's writings about the meaning of the SGGS and I've enjoyed her alternative viewpoint.

michaelulukaiu ji thanks for updating. So which one is it in terms of Name and Title and year of Publication?

Perhaps you can share a Shabad or two.

Sat Sri Akal.

Ambarsaris ji,

I have the Sri Guru Granth Sahib translated by Dr Gopal Singh. First edition printed in 1960 :)

I am not too farmiliar with a lot of the Sikh terminology so had to google what shabad was :grinningsingh:

My favoutire shabad so far would be very early on, it reads (in engish):

"When the hands, feet and body are soiled,
Water washes them pure.
When the clothes are spoiled,
Soap cleans them sure.
When the mind is polluted by Sin and Shame,
'Tis clensed by the Love of the Name.
The virtuous and vicious are not mere echoes,
One carries along all that one does.
That one soweth, one himself reapeth,
And cometh and goeth as He Ordaineth."

I really appreciate people taking an interest in my learning. I am Sikh now, but have not been most of my life so I, am at times, finding it difficult when there are things or sayings I don't fuly understand :)

Bẖarī▫ai hath pair ṯan ḏeh.

When the hands and the feet and the body are dirty,

Pāṇī ḏẖoṯai uṯras kẖeh.

water can wash away the dirt.

Mūṯ palīṯī kapaṛ ho▫e.

When the clothes are soiled and stained by urine,

Ḏe sābūṇ la▫ī▫ai oh ḏẖo▫e.

soap can wash them clean.

Bẖarī▫ai maṯ pāpā kai sang.

But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin,

Oh ḏẖopai nāvai kai rang.

it can only be cleansed by the Love of the Name.

Punnī pāpī ākẖaṇ nāhi.

Virtue and vice do not come by mere words;

Kar kar karṇā likẖ lai jāhu.

actions repeated, over and over again, are engraved on the soul.

Āpe bīj āpe hī kẖāhu.

You shall harvest what you plant.

Nānak hukmī āvhu jāhu. ||20||

O Nanak, by the Hukam of God's Command, we come and go in reincarnation. ||20||

One way of learning is to share your own knowledge which includes at the simplest level saying this translator says this and the other one says that. All translators like you and me are human so we need to cut them a slack for their own beliefs.

I cite from your post and one from Sant Singh Khalsa ji's interpretation which is the last tuk/line in the Shabad/stanza 20 in Japu ji Sahib (the first collection penned by Guru Nanak Dev ji and included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Nānak hukmī āvhu jāhu. ||20||

Dr. Gopal Singh ji: And cometh and goeth as He Ordaineth."

Dr. Sant Singh ji Khalsa:
O Nanak, by the Hukam of God's Command, we come and go in reincarnation.
The key part is that there is no support of reincarnation in Sikhism or Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji but it is metaphorically referred to. Here even that is not the case.

Ambarsaria understanding: Nanak, by dictum cometh and goeth.

What I added or excised from Gopal Singh ji,

  • Added: Nanak
  • Removed: He
  • Used synonym: "Ordaineth" I replaced with "dictum"; not a huge issue per-se.
Sat Sri Akal and the best to you.
