Does The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Actually Mention God?

All this talk on Atheism, has got me thinking. Does the Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji actually mention the word God, or does it actually just mention something else. Not God as in the Semitic concept.

For example, the first few lines of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji describe "God" as:

Sat - Truth
Akaal Moorat - beyond space and time
Even Ek Onkaar - does not even mean God strictly!

A very good question. That is the reason I ask all people of other beliefs or non- beliefs, which mainly include Atheists and Muslims when they visit this forum if they understand what " God" is according to Sikhi, and from there questioning it is quite apparent that they have preconceived idea of a deity God in Sikhi which is due to absence of any thought process or inkling to research the matter first before jumping to any kind of conclusions.

IK ONG KAAR means ONE SOURCE OF ALL that there is, has been and shall be. The latter part is explained by Guru Nanak in the first pauri of Jap.

So, IT is neither a personified deity that the Atheists define as "God" but not theirs because they have no belief in it. The funny part is that how can one define something/someone that one claims does not exist? Nor is it exclusive to any one religion or school of thought that claims that " God" only sent their people as the exclusive Messengers, Prophets..

Did the concept of monopoly start in this manner?:)

I would urge people also to ask questions and read and understanding Gurbani on their own before declaring that "God" does not exist as per Gurmat, or that Sikhism is a variant of "atheisim" as they define it.

I would further urge people to study some philosophy under the tutelage of reputable teachers before they come up with their own concept of "atheism" and then serve it up as the best dish they have brought for this pot luck get together.

the abrahamic god seems like an emotional person, judgemental, subject to wrath and anger.

so the question I must ask is:

does god in sikh scripture show any attributes of human emotion?

if yes, then expanded:
is this expression of emotion, described in scripture, qualitatively the same as that felt in a 'typical' (for lack of a better word) social or environmental medium?

How to solve:
so, what is the understanding of emotion that is expressed within sikh scriptures?

Yes Randip,

The Sikh concept of the Unapproachable and Unfathomable God
is different from the Ram Rahim which appear in Puranas and the Quran.

It is the mind that tries to arrive at concepts because it cannot witness a multi-directional reality which is beyond its natural habitat. In other words, the mind cannot operate beyond the space-time continuum.

I hope you are not serious else you should not have stated this in the post. However, Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is all about the praise of Him or naam and shabad. There is not a single shabad [hymn] that would be without the Karta-purukh. Many attributes of God have been stated at many places. I am giving below some of the attributes. You will have to make out the exact meaning as I have made notes for self-use. The following list contains only 112 entries and if you so require further list can be posted.I have put them as per my convenience.You may alter the sequence.

  1. He is the best friend-[175-2]
  2. He is mother-[175-3]
  3. He is pervading among all-[176-7]
  4. He is pervading Land , wate and sky-[176-5]
  5. He creates, watches and assigns everyone to task- [173-13]
  6. He crated maya-[6-14]
  7. He is great as he wishes to be-[6-3]

    Yes, Dear sir , with so many attributes of some one you will allow us the prerogative of addressing it as a God or waheguru only.

For some time I have done a similar contemplation. The concept of God as in other religions is different from Sikhee.


Three words are important in this respect.

Sargun-
with attributes (attributed)

[/FONT]Nirgun -attributeless (unattributed)[/FONT]

Nirankar- both
formless and also formed[/FONT].

He Himself is formless and also formed; the One Lord is without attributes and also with attributes.[/FONT]

God in Sikhee appears to be conceived as Nirankar being without form meaning all existence is God's visible form, but no part of it is a substitute for God. God is also Nirguna and sargun.Often our soul is said to be nirgun.

From Ek Ongkar has come Nirankar then Nirgun / Sargun aspects of creation. The Shabad is coming is coming from Nirankar and is the creative force.

Creation and destruction happen through the Word of the Shabad.

Let us look at some [/FONT] different prevailing beliefs about God and creation.

Religions portray GOD as transcendent -existing above and beyond the material world , as immanent - present within the material world or both. [/FONT]
God is characterized as follows:[/FONT]

Animism: [/FONT] A belief in a multitude of spiritual beings that either help or harm. So these are to be appeased. [/FONT]

Dualism: A [/FONT]belief in two supreme Gods that are in opposition to each other. Good and Evil.[/FONT]

Deism[/FONT]: A belief that God transcended creation after creating the universe. The universe is functioning in accordance with laws and God does not involve himself in the affairs of universe.[/FONT]

Monotheism[/FONT] : A belief that there is just one God. [/FONT]

Pantheism[/FONT] : A belief that the universe, with its substances, laws and forces, is an emanation of God. The creator is identified with the creation. All is God and God is all.[/FONT]

Panentheism: A[/FONT] modification of pantheism, insisting that God is the essence of life within creation but is not manifested as creation. All is in God and God is in all.

Polytheism[/FONT] : A belief in the existence of many gods with each god unique . Gods for personality trait. Gods for many facet of nature.[/FONT]

Theism : A[/FONT] belief in a God that is transcendent, immanent and caring for those in the world. God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent in theism. He is perfect, even though evil exists in the world. Being a personal God often intervenes in the affairs of men. The life of creation is a gift of God and not a manifestation of God[/FONT]



Christianity, Islam and Judaism are, monotheistic with some differences. Such as do not subscribe to either pantheism or panentheism.[/FONT]
Sikhism is an exception. It stands for monotheism but with a modified panentheistic stance on creation. All is in God. God is in All. All is God. ---- Ekoooo[/FONT]

What diverse views. No wonder a Guru is needed.



The Shabad as is in Sikhism, is not seen in other religions (as for as I could find it). For the Sikhs the Shabad Guru individually guides and is ever with everyone.[/FONT]
A thought comes that is Shabad Guru for the Sikhs is same as Personal God for many others. This view requires a thinking.

Lets analyse this words meaning:

The teachings of most of the saints amongst Hindus and Muslims refer as far as Brahm. Very rarely do we find in them references to Parbrahm. But in SGGS you get Parbrahm everywhere, so to speak. It means beyond Brahm because Brahmand or Brahm Lok is subject to change and destruction. Beyond Brahmand is AmarLok or Parbrahm or Sach Khand.

Let's view the contents of the following shabad:-

when you are wandering around in all four directions, and you cannot sit or sleep even for a moment -

When you are under the power of sexual desire, anger and worldly attachment, or a greedy miser in love with your wealth;

you may have delightful and beautiful gardens, and issue unquestioned commands;

Rang ṯamāse baho biḏẖī cẖā▫e lag rahi▫ā.
you may have enjoyments and entertainments of all sorts and kinds, and continue to enjoy exciting pleasures -

चिति न आइओ पारब्रहमु ता सरप की जूनि गइआ ॥६॥
Cẖiṯ na ā▫i▫o pārbarahm ṯā sarap kī jūn ga▫i▫ā. ||6||
and yet, if you do not come to remember the Supreme Lord God, you shall be reincarnated as a snake. ||6||

Bahuṯ ḏẖanādẖ acẖārvanṯ sobẖā nirmal rīṯ.
You may possess vast riches, maintain virtuous conduct, have a spotless reputation and observe religious customs;

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈਆ ਸਾਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ
मात पिता सुत भाईआ साजन संगि परीति ॥
Māṯ piṯā suṯ bẖā▫ī▫ā sājan sang parīṯ.
you may have the loving affections of mother, father, children, siblings and friends;

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਲਸਕਰ ਤਰਕਸਬੰਦ ਬੰਦ ਜੀਉ ਜੀਉ ਸਗਲੀ ਕੀਤ
लसकर तरकसबंद बंद जीउ जीउ सगली कीत ॥
Laskar ṯarkasbanḏ banḏ jī▫o jī▫o saglī kīṯ.
you may have armies well-equipped with weapons, and all may salute you with respect;

Cẖiṯ na ā▫i▫o pārbarahm ṯā kẖaṛ rasāṯal ḏīṯ. ||7||
But still, if you do not come to remember the Supreme Lord God, then you shall be taken and consigned to the most hideous hell! ||7||

काइआ रोगु न छिद्रु किछु ना किछु काड़ा सोगु ॥
Kā▫i▫ā rog na cẖẖiḏar kicẖẖ nā kicẖẖ kāṛā sog.
You may have a body free of disease and deformity, and have no worries or grief at all;

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਮਿਰਤੁ ਆਵੀ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਗੈ ਭੋਗੁ
मिरतु न आवी चिति तिसु अहिनिसि भोगै भोगु ॥
Miraṯ na āvī cẖiṯ ṯis ahinis bẖogai bẖog.
you may be unmindful of death, and night and day revel in pleasures;

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਤੋਨੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਇ ਸੰਕ ਧਰਿਆ
सभ किछु कीतोनु आपणा जीइ न संक धरिआ ॥
Sabẖ kicẖẖ kīṯon āpṇā jī▫e na sank ḏẖari▫ā.
you may take everything as your own, and have no fear in your mind at all;

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਚਿਤਿ ਆਇਓ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਵਸਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥੮॥
चिति न आइओ पारब्रहमु जमकंकर वसि परिआ ॥८॥
Cẖiṯ na ā▫i▫o pārbarahm jamkankar vas pari▫ā. ||8||
but still, if you do not come to remember the Supreme Lord God, you shall fall under the power of the Messenger of Death. ||8||

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੁ
किरपा करे जिसु पारब्रहमु होवै साधू संगु ॥
Kirpā kare jis pārbarahm hovai sāḏẖū sang.
The Supreme Lord showers His Mercy, and we find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਓਹੁ ਵਧਾਈਐ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ
जिउ जिउ ओहु वधाईऐ तिउ तिउ हरि सिउ रंगु ॥
Ji▫o ji▫o oh vaḏẖā▫ī▫ai ṯi▫o ṯi▫o har si▫o rang.
The more time we spend there, the more we come to love the Lord.

</td></tr> <tr><td> ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਆਪਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਥਾਉ
दुहा सिरिआ का खसमु आपि अवरु न दूजा थाउ ॥
Ḏuhā siri▫ā kā kẖasam āp avar na ḏūjā thā▫o.
The Lord is the Master of both worlds; there is no other place of rest.

सतिगुर तुठै पाइआ नानक सचा नाउ ॥९॥१॥२६॥
Saṯgur ṯuṯẖai pā▫i▫ā Nānak sacẖā nā▫o. ||9||1||26||
When the True Guru is pleased and satisfied, O Nanak, the True Name is obtained. ||9||1||26||
