ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok
ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ॥ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਆਇਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਥ ॥੧॥
Ḏīn ḏaraḏ ḏukẖ bẖanjnā gẖat gẖat nāth anāth. Saraṇ ṯumĥārī ā▫i▫o Nānak ke parabẖ sāth. ||1||
The saviour from misery and hurt of the poor, the helper of the forlorn. I am at your door creator, holding the coattails of Guru Nanak


ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
Eight stanzas hymn.
ਜਹ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਮਨ ਊਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
Jah māṯ piṯā suṯ mīṯ na bẖā▫ī. Man ūhā nām ṯerai sang sahā▫ī.
Where your mother, father, son or friend don’t sustain. My mind, the creator’s understanding will assist and sustain
ਜਹ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਦੂਤ ਜਮ ਦਲੈ ॥ ਤਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਚਲੈ ॥
Jah mahā bẖa▫i▫ān ḏūṯ jam ḏalai. Ŧah keval nām sang ṯerai cẖalai.
Where there is a specter of threatening demons. Only creator’s understanding sustains you there
ਜਹ ਮੁਸਕਲ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੀ ॥
Jah muskal hovai aṯ bẖārī. Har ko nām kẖin māhi uḏẖārī.
Where there is a great obstacle. The creator’s understanding can save in the blink of an eye
ਅਨਿਕ ਪੁਨਹਚਰਨ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਤਰੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
Anik punahcẖaran karaṯ nahī ṯarai. Har ko nām kot pāp parharai.
Carrying out many rituals and offerings does not save. The creator’s understanding delivers from millions of evil acts
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥੧॥
Gurmukẖ nām japahu man mere. Nānak pāvhu sūkẖ gẖanere. ||1||
My mind understand through the closeness with the teacher Guru. Guru Nanak, through creator’s understanding much comfort will follow

ESSENCE: In this salok, Guru Arjan Dev ji sets the objective of discourse in Astpadi 2. In understanding of the creator solutions are found for the forsaken, deserted, in misery and in sickness. Guru ji humbly submit to the always aware company of the creator.

Guru ji state in Astpadi 2nd, 1st Sabad that where the family cannot help, you are scared of death, terrible obstacles in the way, carrying out rituals and ceremonies is of little avail. Here comes the understanding of the creator, which can help you in spur of a moment.

Guru ji so conclude that concentrate on seeking understanding of the creator and be comfortable and happy in life.

My 2 cent worth.

In the Ist Shabad of 2nd Ashtpadi and the Salok before, Guru Sahib subtly tell us what Simran is which he had mentioned in the first one and as very well explained both Simran and Jaap by you with the help of Mahan Kosh.

Once we understand Ik Ong Kaar with the help of our inner Gurdwaras, (Thanks Harry ji and sorry for nicking your well thought expression), then our only place of refuge, help, a shoulder to lean on is Ik Ong Kaar because, The Source is the only one who knows our inner conflicts, our pains and suffering. Ik Ong Kaar is our only true shrink.

So; a hug, an embrace, a pat at the back as a motivation even when we are wrong, a hand to pick us up when we have fallen, someone to shake our shoulders to wake us up when we are sleep walking in the only ONE- Ik Ong Kaar.
