Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਭਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭਿ ਸਚੁ ੧॥
Āḏ sacẖ jugāḏ sacẖ. Hai bẖė sacẖ Nānak hosī bẖė sacẖ. ||1||
Present from the beginning, prevailing through the ages. Nanak, is present now and forever will be present.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਤਿਨਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ
Saṯ sarūp riḏai jin māni▫ā. Karan karāvan ṯin mūl pacẖẖāni▫ā.
One who keeps such eternal persona in heart. Such discovered the root of doer and the director.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਇਆ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇਆ
Jā kai riḏai bisvās parabẖ ā▫i▫ā. Ŧaṯ gi▫ān ṯis man paragtā▫i▫ā.
Such who built faith of creator in the heart. True knowledge enlightened their mind.

ਭੈ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇ ਬਸਾਨਾ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ
Bẖai ṯe nirbẖa▫o ho▫e basānā. Jis ṯe upji▫ā ṯis māhi samānā.
Shedding fear such live as fearless. Where one comes from so immerses into the same.

ਬਸਤੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਲੇ ਬਸਤੁ ਗਡਾਈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਭਿੰਨ ਕਹਨਾ ਜਾਈ
Basaṯ māhi le basaṯ gadā▫ī. Ŧā ka▫o bẖinn na kahnā jā▫ī.
One thing merges with same thing. Such cannot be called separate.

ਬੂਝੈ ਬੂਝਨਹਾਰੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ ਮਿਲੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕ ੨॥
Būjẖai būjẖanhār bibek. Nārā▫in mile Nānak ek. ||2||
Such concept discovered by discoverers. Nanak becomes of one meeting with the creator.
ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state the eternal truth prevailing and so prevailing forever from the past to the future.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 17, 2nd sabad describe the mind accepting of the one creator. In understanding of one creator is found the does and the director, enlightenment of mind happens, fear is gone as one sees self being born from one and immersing back into one.


Guru ji conclude that one so finds when one seeks and becomes one with the creator through such an understanding.
