Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸੰਤ ਸਰਨਿ ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਪਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਉਧਰਨਹਾਰ ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ੧॥
Sanṯ saran jo jan parai so jan uḏẖranhār. Sanṯ kī ninḏā nānkā bahur bahur avṯār. ||1||
Those who seek humble guidance from the pious, such are saved. Nanak, denigrating the pious encumbers one in repetitive births.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਸਭ ਘਟ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਓਹੁ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ
Sabẖ gẖat ṯis ke oh karnaihār. Saḏā saḏā ṯis ka▫o namaskār.
All bodies are of such (creator) only so is able to create. Always and always a respectful bow to such.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ
Parabẖ kī usṯaṯ karahu ḏin rāṯ. Ŧisėh ḏẖi▫āvahu sās girās.
Recognize the creator’s virtues day and night. Contemplate such with each breath in and out.

ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰੇ ਤੈਸਾ ਕੋ ਥੀਆ
Sabẖ kacẖẖ varṯai ṯis kā kī▫ā. Jaisā kare ṯaisā ko thī▫ā.
All that happens is so directed by such. What such makes, so one becomes.

ਅਪਨਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਦੂਸਰ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ
Apnā kẖel āp karnaihār. Ḏūsar ka▫un kahai bīcẖār.
Is the director and player of own play. Who else can so deliberate.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਸੇਇ ੮॥੧੩॥
Jis no kirpā karai ṯis āpan nām ḏe▫e. Badbẖāgī Nānak jan se▫e. ||8||13||
One who is blessed is given such (creator’s) understanding. Nanak, such are the fortunate people.
ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji describe the importance of company of the pious and the futility of denigrating the pious. Salvation comes in the company and restless transformations follow ill will towards the pious.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 13, 8th and final sabad link back to the creator versus individual manifestations. Respects to the creator of all bodies, with every breath remember such day and night, all happens as directed and what such does materializes, who other can say when such is the play and player.


Guru ji conclude this Astpadi 13th by saying how fortunate the one’s that are so blessed by the creator and as a result get the understanding.

NOTE: There is marvelous use of metaphors in this sabad to address and convey the audience of the Guru ji's times. It is a dis-service to turn these around as though Guru ji imply belief in any subject(s) of metaphors.
