ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸੰਤ ਸਰਨਿ ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਪਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਉਧਰਨਹਾਰ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥੧॥
Sanṯ saran jo jan parai so jan uḏẖranhār. Sanṯ kī ninḏā nānkā bahur bahur avṯār. ||1||
Those who seek humble guidance from the pious, such are saved. Nanak, denigrating the pious encumbers one in repetitive births.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਦੂਖਨਿ ਆਰਜਾ ਘਟੈ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਦੂਖਨਿ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
Sanṯ kai ḏūkẖan ārjā gẖatai. Sanṯ kai ḏūkẖan jam ṯe nahī cẖẖutai.
Hurting the pious living life becomes of less. Hurting the pious one is not salvaged from the death demon.

ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਦੂਖਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਦੂਖਨਿ ਨਰਕ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
Sanṯ kai ḏūkẖan sukẖ sabẖ jā▫e. Sanṯ kai ḏūkẖan narak mėh pā▫e.
Hurting the pious all the comforts are dissipated. Hurting the pious one lives as if in hell.

ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਦੂਖਨਿ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਮਲੀਨ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਦੂਖਨਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਤੇ ਹੀਨ ॥
Sanṯ kai ḏūkẖan maṯ ho▫e malīn. Sanṯ kai ḏūkẖan sobẖā ṯe hīn.
Hurting the pious the intellect becomes impure. Hurting the pious the honor is lost.

ਸੰਤ ਕੇ ਹਤੇ ਕਉ ਰਖੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਦੂਖਨਿ ਥਾਨ ਭ੍ਰਸਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Sanṯ ke haṯe ka▫o rakẖai na ko▫e. Sanṯ kai ḏūkẖan thān bẖarsat ho▫e.
The one’s rebuked by the pious are helped by none. Hurting the pious the heart is corrupted.

ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਭੀ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥
Sanṯ kirpāl kirpā je karai. Nānak saṯsang ninḏak bẖī ṯarai. ||1||
If the benevolent pious one so blesses. Nanak even the one that slanders is saved in the company of pious.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji describe the importance of company of the pious and the futility of denigrating the pious. Salvation comes in the company and restless transformations follow ill will towards the pious.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 13, 1st sabad give indications of seriousness in mis-treating the pious. Metaphorically Guru ji illustrate as to the lessening of age, the troubles in death, loss of comfort in living, ruinous here after as though hell, the degeneration of wisdom in mind, lack of respect, are lonesome deserted with a corrupted heart.

Guru ji conclude that the pious if so benevolent even the so bad described may be salvaged.

NOTE: There is marvelous use of metaphors in this sabad to address and convey the audience of the Guru ji's times. It is a dis-service to turn these around as though Guru ji imply belief in any subject(s) of metaphors.

ਸੰਤ (One who believes in Truth of Nature ad Practise in life)
ਸਰਨਿ (Company) ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ( person) ਪਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ
ਉਧਰਨਹਾਰ (gets salvation, peace, no thoughts in mind, peace, freedom from thought)॥
ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ (states in thought cycles, thoughts which come and go, leads to duality, cause of dukh, negtaivity in mind, ) ॥੧॥

Those who company believvers of Truth of Nature gets salvation from thought cycles in mind(no thought in mind, peace), who defy saints stay with the birth and death of same type of thought cycles and further ellaborated
