AMRITSAR: Pakistan government could begin Shagun Scheme for the marriage of Sikh girls besides giving 5 % reservation to wards of Sikhs in government jobs. President of Pakistan Sikh Council Ramesh Singh told TOI on Friday that he had led a delegation of Sikhs to meet minority affairs minister Gyan Chand Esrani and to apprise him of the issues faced by Sikh community in Pakistan on Friday.

He said majority of Sikh families were not affluent to even spend on the marriages of their daughters and Sikh's had been demanding to begin Shagun Scheme for the marriages of their girl child. "The minister has assured us that Sindh government would soon begin Shagun Scheme and would give Rs 25000 on the marriage of Sikh girls". He informed that the minister had asked a list of 100 such needy families who were in need of money.

Marriages of many Sikh girls living in Sindh province of Pakistan were delayed since their parents couldn't afford the expenses or arrange for dowry money said he while adding that the Shagun Scheme would prove to be a boon for these poor Sikh families. He informed that Sikhs had been demanding from Sindh government to give 5% reservation to Sikhs in government jobs. "We had been taking this issue at various levels with government for past several years but now we have been assured to give 5% reservation by the minister" he said. He said the minister had also asked from Council to submit a list of needy Sikh youth to consider their case on priority.

Ramesh also informed that they took up the issue of dilapidated condition of Gurdwara's in Sindh. "On our request the minister immediately approved Rs 40 and Rs 30 lakhs for the Gurdwara Sri Guru Granth Sahib Karachi and Guru Nanak Temple Karachi respectively" he said Ramesh also informed that the Minister had given his consent to various Sikh religious functions being held by Council.

Shagun scheme is good move, and a populist one. A bigger concern among minorities in Sindh is the rising number of cases of abduction and forced marriages of Non-Muslim teenage girls to Muslims, sponsored by extremist Muslim factions ( www.humanrights.asia/news/ahrc-news/AHRC-STM-136-2013). Perhaps the provincial government could do something to address that important issue as well.

What is this Shagun Scheme? Shouldn't they work on elevating the educational and societal standards of the Sikhs instead of giving handouts?
