Punjab, Haryana, UT officers take pledge of non-violence on Gandhi Jayanti

CHANDIGARH: The state governments of Punjab and Haryana and Union Terrotiry of Chandigarh on Tuesday observed Gandhi Jayanti by taking pledge to adopt the path of non-violence shown by Mahatma Gandhi.
About hundred senior officers of Punjab Government assembled at Punjab Bhawan here to take oath of rededication to themselves to the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi on the first 'international Day of non-violence' to mark the Gandhi Jayanti.
Punjab Chief Secretary R.I. Singh, Director General Police, . NPS Aulakh, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Punjab . D.S. Guru alongwith all others senior IAS and IPS officers at state headquarters took the oath administered by Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh through National Level online live telecast programme.
The officers took the pledge to make India a classless, colourless and casteless country which will have no high class and low class of people and curse of untouchablility and every person will have equal rights. In a message on the occasion Mr. R.I. Singh Chief Secretary Government of Punjab said that the nation owes a great debt to Mahatma Gandhi who had the nations freedom movement following a peaceful and non-violent path.
UT officers take pledge
Gandhi Jayanti was commemorated in Union Territory of Chandigarh by a pledge - taking ceremony led by Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen. (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, at a brief and solemn function at UT Secretariat, here Tuesday.
The senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration including Advisor to the Administrator, UT, Pradip Mehra, Home Secretary, Krishna Mohan, Finance Secretary, S.K. Sandhu, Inspector General of Police, S.K. Jain, Deputy Commissioner, R.K. Rao, Special Secretary Finance, Raji P. Srivastava, Managing Director, CITCO, Jasbir Singh Bir, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation P.S. Aujla attended the ceremony.
As soon as Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh led the Nation in Pledge taking ceremony on the screen of a Media Channel, the Administrator and all others stood and repeated the Oath.
In a message, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, General Rodrigues said that the Nation owes a great debt to Mahatma Gandhi who led the Nation’s freedom movement, following a peaceful and non-violent path. He said that the world has recognized his philosophy and the United Nations has declared his birth anniversary as the “International Day of Non-violence” being observed throughout the length and breadth of globe. He said that he was a fearless crusader and the entire nation listened and followed him, in bringing about change through the tools of peace and non-violence.
Haryana Governor garlands Gandhi portrait
Haryana Governor Dr. A.R. Kidwai while speaking at the Gandhi Jayanti function organized at Haryana Raj Bhavan here Kidwai said that India is the only country in the world which has attained freedom by treading the path of non-violence. He urged people to follow Mahatma Gandhi's ideals and teachings for getting peace and happiness in life. On this occasion the Governor garlanded and offered rose petals on the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri whose anniversary also falls today. Haryana Agriculture Minister H.S. Chatha and senior officers of the State Government also offered floral tributes on this occasion.
A Sarv Dharm Prarthana Sabha was also organized on this occasion in which the priests of all religions highlighted the higher values of life. The favourite religious bhajans of Mahatma Gandhi were also sung by renowned singer and Head of the Music Department of Government College for Women, Sector-11, Chandigarh, Ms. Ratnika Tiwari and her party.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Cooperation Minister Capt. Kanwaljit Singh Tuesday exhorted the youth to follow the teaching of Mahatma Gandhi to realize his vision for an empowered and non-violent world.
He was presiding over the 2 nd Indo-Pak students peace camp-2007 organized here today by Yuvsatta, Dev Samaj College for women (Sec-45), KB DAV School (Sec-7) and Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti, New Delhi.
The Cooperation Minister said that Gandhi Ji played a pivotal role in the freedom movement of the Nation by providing leadership for a successful fight for the rights of the Indians with his unfailing weapons of 'satyagraha' and always preached non-violence and devoted himself to the propagation of unity and integrity, removal of untouchability, equality of women and reconstruction of the rural India.
The Minister further said that there were numerous challenges ahead for developing countries like India and Pakistan and they should strive ahead for providing better facilities to the public. He further said that to create quality infrastructure, the developing countries have to shun the approach of acquiring weapons of mass destruction which were claiming the major portion of their respective budgets.
He underlined the need to build a cohesive South Asian Identity to ensure a greater attention and say on the global stage. He urged the student of both India & Pakistan to play role of peace ambassadors on both sides to bring both countries more closely for further paving way for strengthening South Asian region, which was the need of the hour.
