Surinder was wearing a Kirpaan when she was told she would no longer be permitted to wear it because it was a violation of company policy to bring a “weapon” to the workplace.

To make the matter worse, Surinder Kaur’s husband, Avtar Singh, also an Amritdhari Sikh and truck driver, was shot by unknown gunmen on May 19, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona. While he was waiting to be picked up by his son after parking his 18-wheeler, two men drove by and shouted, "Go back to your own country,” then opened fire, wounding Avtar Singh in the lower abdomen and upper thigh. Avtar Singh wears a turban and untrimmed beard as part of his Sikh faith. Investigators believe his appearance was the sole reason he was targeted. Local and federal authorities investigated the incident as a hate crime.
