CHANDIGARH: Punjab government is likely to take up the issue of arrest of a Sikh truck driver hailing from state with the West Bengal Government. The driver Gurjant Singh hailing from Sangrur district was arrested on charge of attempt to murder Union Railway Minister Mamya Banerjee.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Wednesday said that he had read the news in newspapers but still not aware of circumstances of arrest of Gurjant Singh. On being asked by Journalists, Badal said that he would ask the DGP to talk to his counterpart in WEst Bengal regarding this case. Badal agreed that it was possible that truck hit the convoy accidently. It can happen with him also but it doent mean that it was an attempt to murder him.

A leading English newspaper had carried a front page report citing poor condition of driver's family who doesn't have means to even provide legal aid to him. Driver Gurjant Singh who belonged to village Mauran in Sangrur district had reportedly rammed truck into the convoy of Mamta Banerjee while she was returning from a rally held at Lal Garh few days back. The driver was first arrested for rash driving and let off on bail He was however later book on attempt to murder and arrested again.

The family members of Gurjant Singh said that nobody from WB police have tried to cotnact them. Surjit Kaur mother of driver said that her son is illeterate and cant even think of killing Mamta Banerjee. The residents of village have also believed that Gurjant Singh was innocent and he was involved due to political rivalry between TMC and ruling CPM. The trucker's brother Veer Singh claimed that accident occured due to failure of breaks and it was not pre-planned.

Gurjant Singh has three children, daughters Parwinder Kaur(15) and Kirandeep Kaur(12) and son Jatinder Singh(9). The family is so poor that none of the children can afford to go to government school in the village.
