"Amazing Grace"

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That sav’d a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev’d;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ’d!

Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promis’d good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

John Newton, Olney Hymns (London: W. Oliver, 1779)


I am just wondering what this would be in Punjabi because so many ideas and words remind me of ideas and words in Gurbani. John Newton who wrote this hymn found his spiritual center one night on the deck of a slave ship in the middle of the ocean during a terrible storm. The sailor who relieved him was swept overboard. Newton then took back his post and stayed at his post until the storm had ended. But it was during that time that he confessed his helplessness in the face of destiny and his dependence on God's grace for life itself.

The big difference between the understanding of John Newton who was a Christian and the message of Nanak is that he must wait for death to be called back home.

I am hoping for a Punjabi translation that is consistent with Sikhi -- about grace, being blind, gaining sight, being lost, being found, going home, so many similar ideas.

I've dreamed many dreams that never came true,
I've seen them vanish at dawn.
But I've realized enough of my dreams, thank God,
To make me want to dream on.

I've prayed many prayers, when no answers came,
Though I waited so patient and long,
But answers came to enough of my prayers
To make me keep praying on.

I actually do! ;) They were not on my radar screen until early this morning when I went looking for music to go with the poem posted by NamJap ji. The video art in the second clip --- that I also found very haunting. Do you like rasmus? :cool:

There were also some cool videos by Japanese vocal artists -- but I could not understand a word other than they had something to do with the ups and downs of life. So NOT POSTED.

HERE IS FROM ME TO AAD JI, NAMJAP JI, AMARSANGHERA Ji ( And my dear respected spiritual FRIEND)

Diamond on the leaves

In a virgin morning
Light bright rays caress the leave of plants
Turning drops of dew into sparkling diamonds
Amazingly attractive soothing my eyes in amazement
Then quietness goes under attack of unwanted noise
A weak freeze starts and I see swinging plants
The diamonds fall down in their originality
Eyes in wonder couldn’t believe the end of the beauty
Isn’t the same path we all heading to?
They gave pleasure to my inquisitive eyes for a while
Left me wondering what do we have to offer?

One Love

One Love, so pure, so sweet
Your distance draws me near
Your love, so tempting
Your presence surrounds me
I cannot breathe
Fear grips me
Is this true love?
My heart beats fast, I think of you
Beautiful, warm, innocent
Coincidence, fate and destiny
Soulmates or strangers in love?
I sense a higher power
Faith and hope wanders in my conscience
Honest love, raw emotions
Seem so clear, yet hard to believe
When will this journey end or
Is this the beginning of the most wonderful love story?
Time will tell

Assi ik passa sun bende haan

|| Every talk (conversation we have) has two sides to it
We end up listening to one and
Overlook the other side ... ||


Gal koi kissa kahaani nai
har gal zindagi wich shamil hai
Assi ik passa sun bende haan
te duje nu bhul jaande haan


|| This little talk is not just a Story or a Fable
It is a piece of our lives.

We end up listening to one perspective and
Overlook the other side .. ||

Gal gallan wichon bandi hai
te gallan wich aa mukdee hai
koi uche gal kar benda hai te
koi bolno reh jaanda hai


|| A little talk comes out of a Bigger pool of words
and ends up just being a part of that Bigger pool of words
Sometimes some people end up saying their words out aloud
and some people miss the chance to say anything ||

Sochan dee wee kee gal hai
assi kee kee galan sochde haan
kadi soch di gal karde haan

|| Thinking about words (conversations) or thoughts is amazing
and that we think of words or conversations of endless meaning
that sometimes we talk about the thought itself
and then sometimes we think about the words we have uttered ||




Kadi galan karr karr ronde haan
kaddi ron diyan galan karde haan
fer rondiyan en galan nu
zindagi wich shamil karr lende haan


|| Sometimes we cry while saying those words and
sometimes we talk to make us or others cry
then these little conversations of sadness
become a part our lives forever||


Teri gal , meri gal, sadhee gal

ohna di gal, sab di gal
is gal wich izhaar wee hai te
kisse gal wich inkaar wee hai
kadi gal wich pyaar wee hai

te kadi is gal wich talwar wee hai


|| your words, My words, our words,
their words, Everybody’s words
These words have acceptance in em
and some of these words have denial
some times they have love in them
and sometimes they are a trial (literally means .. they are like swords)||

Kuch galan sach wee ne
te kuch galan hore wee ne
kuch galan wich zore wee hai
te kuch galan kamzore wee ne


||Some of these words are true

And some are otherwise
Some have real power in them
Some of them are so weak||



galan da yaaron kee hai eh
galan te kadi mukdeyan nai
mukna te asee te tussi ne hai
galan ethae reh jaandeyan ne


||What is about these little words that we say

these words are not going to die or end
only you and I will die out

these words will still be here in this world||



Shayad assi en galan wich
aapna aap nu labde haan
Us laban di koshish wich
kayien galan hore karr jande haan



|| Perhaps in these words
we are trying to find ourselves
And during this search of ours
we end up doing or saying more words which can affect others in many ways||




Fer kyun eh gala teeran waang
aa aa Seene wich wadjeyan ne
fer kyun sadhe dil dimmag utte
eh khoon khraba kardiyan ne


|| Then Why sometimes these Arrows of words
can come and pierce our hearts
and why on our thoughts and emotions
these words can have a bloodshed||



Shayad in hee galan wich asee
Insaan nu labde firde haan
Shayad assi en galan wich
Rabb nu labde firde haan
Us talaash de ik junoon wich
ik gal asee bhul jaande haan

|| Perhaps in these words
we are trying to find the human or humanity
|| Perhaps in these words
we are trying to find the God
During this passionate struggle
we end up forgetting a important fact..that ||

ke har Gal do passe de hondee hai
Assi ik passa sun bende haan
te duje nu bhul jaande haan
Te duje nu BHul Jaande haan


|| Every little talk(conversation we have) has two sides to it
We end up listening to one and
Forget the other side .. ||

And Overlook the other side .. ||

The dual perspective comes only, my dear, from the dual minded
The tTuth, The whole Truth and nothing but the Truth
Leaves no room for duplicitous duality or double edged swords

What are words, Mere Pyaare, they fall from mouths of babbling brooks
Mistook for offensives when only intended to release thoughts within
Fear, hate, ignorance and suffering in our thoughts manifest as demons.

Look both ways before we embark, to cross the way to the other side
Dashing traffic flows in both directions, inflections in speech beseeching
What do you hear, could you speak aloud what is contained within your heart.

We feel, My dearest, and we sense emotions so tense, suspended in Amrit of a celestial brew
What are diamonds but glistening stones, fossilised, clarified coals, of an ancient era
Encompassed and enslaved to the wearers paradigm, as powerful as the hearts endeavour.

Words, Meri Jaan, to the eloquent a shaan, gumnaam, and the tormented as accursed chattering
Incessant and unceasing, without releasing the pain seeking escape from within
You hear, and at times listen, smarting from the bitterness and I know I offend.

I read the Guru Granth sahib to give life to my Soul, how could I improve what is writ
The Guru, The Great Lord, suffered too what we abhor, and ignored, posthumously exhumed and lauded.
His words are as breath to our living Spirit, could we bear the weak seeking to malign.

Stretch forth my hands to clasp my own chest and find it beats to the tune of your Sangeet
There is no absolution isn Truth, they guffawed, I disagree and prove I am right in this regard
Yet wrong for those marketers of words weaved as magikery by thieves of a Truth plundered.

Jaaneman, Jaane Jahaan, Jaane Jigar, Jaanki Ji, cast asunder your troubles or your ego shed
Are two manners of speech of a single intent, graciously intended or salaciously rendered
Apply a little sweetness for it wounds, My Dear, when your brandished sword, gains foes applaud.

If life were peace, and the Soul at ease what use would we of muttering and speech, in silence would dwell
In blissful contemplation of the Lords invocation, we listen and hear, in silence adore, encore, he said
In peace love flows freely, and silence enchanted, what use for words when the Spirit doth speak.

I do not write poetry here, having read much poetry, I do not think any could better the Poetry of our Guru’s. :shy:
