NEW DELHI: Opposition members in Rajya Sabha on Thursday demanded action against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and others for their alleged role in the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.
Citing the TOI report which stated how the investigating agency had earlier ignored cases against Kumar leading to delay of trial, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said the government should make efforts to speed up the trial and punish those guilty of the 1984 riots.
Dhindsa also pointed out how the CBI allegedly messed up with the probe in the case of another Congress leader. He said while joint director of the agency stated it to be a fit case to be chargesheeted, the director allegedly turned it down arguing for filing a closure report.
Dhindsa was supported in the Upper House by independent member Tarlochan Singh who alleged that the government had failed to do justice to the victims of the 1984 riots.
They raised the issue while participating in the discussion on the working of the home ministry
