CHANDIGARH: Radical Sikh organization Damdami Taksal which has been entrusted the task of Operation Bluestar Memorial in Golden Temple complex has now taken responsibility of maintaining “peace and communal harmony” in Punjab. Paradoxically, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala, 14th chief of the organization headed the Khalistan movement in 1980s.

Harnam Singh Dhumma, present chief of Taksal said entire Sant Samaj and Taksal are partners of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and would not allow anyone to play with the hard earned peace of the state.

He said the Congress and BJP leaders who are opposing the memorial have their own motives and aspirations and trying to reap their own political benefits from the situation.

Condemning army operation in 1984, Dhumma said Bhindranwala was not in Golden Temple but close to Akal Takht, if the government really wanted to bring him out, there were other means except attacking the holiest shrine of Sikhs.

He further added, thousands of innocent devotees, including Hindus and Sikhs were killed during the Operation Bluestar and memorial is commemorated to them. He blamed cente’s apathy towards Punjab which had led to inception of terrorism in the state.

Taksal chief said when Sikhs have never objected over Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Beant Singh, Harbans Lal Khanna’s memorial, why controversy was being created over the Bluestar memorial.

He said, we know the value of peace and we are responsible for maintenance of peace in Punjab and no one should issue such provoking statements which can encourage miscreants to take advantage of the situation in state.
