FERNTREE Gully’s Amitoj Singh is the first cop in Victoria to wear an official police turban.

The 32-year-old father who migrated from the north-west Indian city of Amritsar five years ago, graduated as a policeman on Friday March 11, wearing his turban.

Constable Singh helped develop the headwear with Victoria Police and the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria, and said he was proud to pioneer the advancement.

“I’m surprised it came in so late in Victoria - people are wearing them all over the world,” Constable Singh said.

“But I’m pretty proud to be the first one.”

He said he was not bothered about any negative reactions from some member of the public..

“Victoria is one of the most multicultural parts of the world and so far the community has been fantastic about it,” he said.

Constable Singh, who is stationed in Endeavour Hills, said his family was proud of him.

He said he chose a career in

the police force because he wanted to push his limits. “My mother was a bit scared at first, but she is really happy about it,” he said.
