Jor Mela ends with colourful nagar kirtan

An impressive Nagar Kirtan wound its way through the streets of Fatehgarh Sahib on the final day of the three-day ‘Shahidi Jor Mele’ to commemorate the martyrdom of Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, younger sons of the 10th Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh, and their grandmother Mata Gujri. The colourful kirtan started from Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and concluded at Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup, where the sahibzadas and Mata Gujri were cremated.

Among the prominent persons who participated in the religious procession were Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, Takht Keshgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Tarlochan Singh, Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh and Damdami Taksal head Harnam Singh Khalsa, head granthi of Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib Giani Harpal Singh and SGPC chief Avtar Singh, besides a large number of Sikh organisations.

More than one hundred gatka parties, religious groups and schools participated in this religious procession. The main attraction of the procession was the congregational participation of more than one thousand volunteers from educational institutions run by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

They were carrying placards and banners bearing messages against the social evils like female foeticide, dowry system, drug abuse etc.

Speaking on the occasion, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, reiterated that this religious gathering should not be turned into a political show and appealed to all to maintain the sanctity of these commemorative days. He also urged upon Sikhs to value and adhere to the five tenets of Sikhism and follow the teachings of Sikh Gurus. He also called upon Sikh organisations to work for the promotion of religion.

The SGPC Directorate of Education also organised a blood donation camp, in which 112 units of blood was donated. In the evening, the final match of the kabaddi tournament was played between Alankar Sports Club, Kubba and Baba Farid Sports Academy, Faridkot.
