CLOSE WATCH CCTV control room inaugurated at Harmandar Sahib; eight thieves caught in month-long demonstration run

Do no wrong. God has thousand eyes, and more than a hundred at Harmandar Sahib.

At the shrine, when you shut your eyes in prayer, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will watch your back. The new omniscient presence at the Sikh shrine, is devoted to mass surveillance, to secure the holy place from anyone whose ritual is to create trouble. In the month-long demonstration run before the inauguration on Saturday, it caught eight people who had stolen from visitors.

More than 1 lakh devotees are at the place of pilgrimage each day. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief, Avtar Singh Makkar, on Saturday inaugurated the hitech network and control room in the Parikrama. The control room has eight 42-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, screens, provision to store footage for 30 days (longer in some cases), eight SGPC's operators, and two experts.

In the demonstration run, the system caught eight thieves, whom the shrine authorities handed over to the police. In one of the clips, a thief sneaks upon a devotee relaxing in the verandah of the Parikrama and pinches a cell phone. “The cameras caught the culprit in action,“ Pramod Verma, managing director of Vantage Intergrated Security Solutions, told the media on Saturday. “The devotee, an army personnel, walked into the control room and thanked the security team.“

Another footage captured a thief stealing from the clothes left near the Amrit Sarovar before the holy dip. Two days later, when the pickpocket returned to the shrine, the police held him and showed the film to his parents.

Verma's company has installed 18 “pan, tilt, and zoom“ cameras and 109 fixed lenses. The network covers the entire area around the sacred tank, Akal Takht, serais, SGPC offices, “langar“ building, “jora ghar“, all entrances to the shrine and Darshani Deori, and the parking lots outside the complex.

“An alert goes to the control room if anyone is at one spot for a very long time,“ said Verma.

“Any unclaimed object will also trigger the alarm.“

The company will fit six more cameras inside Harmandar Sahib, the sanctum sanctorum.

“Probably, the cameras will be wireless,“ said Verma.

Vantage Integrated Security Solutions and its local partner, Skyway Communications and Systems, have trained eight SGPC staffers to run the control room, aided by two technical experts. “My role is to arrange technical help round the clock,“ said Skyway's Sanjay Kumar.
