The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sikhs' highest religious body, is preparing to install jammers inside the Golden Temple complex to stop the "menace of ringing mobile phones".

The Sikhs' holiest of holy shrine receives over 1 lakh people everyday and the entire complex literally remains abuzz with the sound of thousands of ringing cell phones.

Hundreds of devotees have complained to the SGPC and requested it to ensure that some kind of ban is imposed on the usage of cell phones within the temple premises.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar told TOI on Wednesday, "We have been getting complaints from devotees about the maddening tunes and beeps of mobile phones, which disturb them and create obstruction in worship."

The SGPC has set up a panel to recommend suggestions for keeping the phones out of the temple complex. "We are planning to install jammers as banning phones would not be an easy task." According to SGPC officials, it would be very difficult to take care of over a lakh phones everyday.

"Depositing and returning of mobile phones is a gigantic task as more than a lakh devotees pay obeisance at the Golden Temple everyday. The better option appears to be the installation of jammers," said Makkar.

The SGPC has already installed phone jammers near the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple.

"Being without a mobile phone in today's life is something unimaginable but it is a good idea to jam the mobile phone signals in holy places," said Ravinder Singh, a businessman from Ambala who was at the Golden Temple to pay respects along with his family members.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Soon-Golden-Temple-to-use-phone-jammers/articleshow/15036721.cms

Good idea! Can I get one for my Gurdwara please? It doesn't matter how many times the sevadars ask people to turn off their phones or put them on silent, someone always manages to get a call! The worst is when they answer it during Ardaas and leave Darbar Sahib whilst whispering 'hang on, hang on'...

Once you enter such a holy place, its important to be there mentally as well which I think never happens & cell phones contribute to this disturbance the most.

So, in my views its a good initiative but again it should just not remain an initiative but implemented as well.

And Mobile Phones are used to get "hot news" out QUICKLY..like the recent FIGHT between the Head Granthi of Harmandar sahib and the Parkarma Jathedar..The Parkarma jathedar was stopping and searching passers by for stolen goods/cash etc..and the Head Granthi refused to be searched..and the jathedar mentioned loudly that a "big FISH has escaped the net "..and the granthi took this remark a s meant for him...!!!!!!!!!!! so there wa s a big fight right there outside the Harmandar...and it was sent out via mobile phone cameras..bad publicity as even makkar was informed later than the world wide NET !!

Instead of Sangat taking the initiative of minding their cell phones and ringtones, the Gurudwara committee has to act like an authoritarian and jam everyone's mobile phones. Now no one will put up the 'Silent your mobile' sign, it is not needed at all. Why give changi matt to someone when you can use technology!

The Radha Soamis at Beas actually BODY search everyone and REMOVE all things form pockets..handphones, cds etc etc...and then you take back when leaving dera..
They have so much POWER thta they have Taken over the Beas RAILWAY STATION - all Govt announcements are after their Radha Soami Greeting !! They also MOVED the RESERVATION COUNTER to INSIDE BEAS DERA a few miles away..so nay passenger wishing to BOOK Railway tickets etc MUST enter the DERA, be searched etc...and this means BEAS RAILWAY is NO LONGER INDIAN RAIL but RADHA SOAMI RAIL....!!

Even if they put up the 'silent your mobile' sign people will STILL ignore it. Phones will continue to go off. Maybe not as many is all. We have that sign at my Gurdwara right at the door of Darbar Sahib no less!

Jammers are better than being searched or handing in your phone - I'd be worried I wouldn't get it back because there would be too many of them to keep track of.

Its a good thing t be doing making people more focused on what they are there at the gurudwara to do which is naam jaap. And not text, recieve phone calls, but what about emergency situations that should be taken in to consideration all though I am strongly with this idea.

I don't think people handle "emergencies" any better since the advent of cell phones. They are yet another technological distraction. I consider them to be one of the worst inventions of mankind, almost as bad as television.

Because shoes are unlikely to disclose any personal information other than one's foot hygiene...?
I had a good laugh at this :sippingcoffeemunda:

Phones also tend to be worth more than shoes - and they're a lot easier to sell, second-hand!

If you want to sell a stolen phone, just go to a 2nd-hand store and they'll buy instantly, or put it on eBay, etc - potential buyers = anyone looking for a cheap phone. You'll make a nice profit, enough to maybe buy yourself a new sound system.

If you want to sell a stolen pair of size 11.5 shoes, the 2nd-hand store probably won't want them. You can put them on eBay and your potential buyers = anyone with 11.5 sized-feet looking for an old, possibly worn and probably smelly pair of shoes. You'll be waiting quite a while to find a buyer, and then you might make enough money to buy yourself a modest dinner.

If I was a thief and you gave me your shoes to take care of, I probably wouldn't go to the hassle of stealing and selling them for such a measly sum, at the risk of being caught. :p

But if I was a thief and you gave me your $300 cell phone to take care of, there would be little chance of you ever seeing it again.

my point is not about 'stealing"..shoes or phones ..
My point is that according to Makarr sgpc pardhaan..a LAKH people visit Harmandar sahib Daily and that means having to take care of "lakh" handphones....so my question is IF they cna take BEST CARE of 2 LAKH SHOES without a single pair getting LOST/Misplaced..in fact RETURNED polished and cleaned ...to boot (pun intended)....why the system of Jorra Ghar cannot work as a Phone Ghar ?? Granted shoes cost less and phones cost much much more..BUT the SYSTEM works and is fool proof....and to say it works only for shoes because they are worthless and smelly is wrong..a system should work for everything...mundahug

Well Gyaniji, you have a good point!
I guess it is a good solution, but let's consider this - they already have a lakh pair of shoes to take care of. Now also they would to take care of another lakh phones?

I guess it's possible, but what advantage would it have over jamming the signal?
Why not just jam the signal..? Either way you will not be able to make use of your phone. At least if it is in your pocket with the signal jammed, you still know it is safe.

I don't see the advantage of collecting everyone's phone at the risk of it being lost or misplaced, when you could just let everyone keep their phone but force it to be silent.

Phones are delicate material .We may start hearing lot of abuses if the phone fell down from the hand of any sewadaar. Also if any phone stopped working during the custody of Gurdwara then the owner may start blaming sewadar's
for damaging his phone.
