PATIALA: Confusion prevailed among Sikhs over date of observing Martyrdom Day of Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandak Committee (SGPC) and Punjab Government have mentioned November 24 where as Sri Akal Takht has asked to obwerve the day on December 10.
The display boards of SGPC controlled Gurdwaras in this district -that too in the memory of ninth Guru- still projecting that day will be observed on November 24.
Notably, Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on November 8 had announced that the Martyrdom Day of Guru Teg Bahadur will be observed on December 10.
Sikhs, who have thronged in large number today to pay obeisance for Sangrad -new month confused to read the display board that Martyrdom day of 9th guru is still written as on November 24.
The display boards have also mentioned that ‘Nagar Kirtan’ (a religious procession) will be taken out in the Patiala on November 23 from Gurddwara Moti Bagh Sahib on the eve of martyrdom day.
The Jathedar attributed the announcement to phone calls and e-mails received from Sikh Sangat across the country regarding their dilemma to observe the event which was falling merely within three days of Guru Nanak Jayanti which is to be celebrated on November 21.
He said the decision to observe the event on December 10 was reached after consultations with the SGPC chief and other Sikh high priests.
“We have to commemorate it on November 24 according to Nanksahi Calender” said Mukhtiar Singh-manager Gurdwara Dukhniwarb Sahib managed by SGPC, when contacted.
Not we all Gurdwaras controlled by SGPC will commemorate it on November 24, he added. All publicity material has been printed and distributed and he has not received any information regarding any change, he said.
It is learnt that the chief Akal Takht had said that In view of the sentiments of the Sikh Sangat, the date for observing martyrdom day of the ninth Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib, has been put off to December 10. According to him, this was not the first time that such a change has been made. He also admitted that they need to find a way out to deal with the situations where dates of two events are clashing with each other.
Punjab government has not yet taken any decision in this regard. The state government calendar has mentioned the day on November 24. "We have not received any communication from SGPC, said an official".
Nevertheless, the move has not gone down well with the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) which has made it clear that it will observe the event on its original date.
DSGMC chief Paramjeet Singh Sarna, when contacted, said they would observe the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur on November 24 only. He said that they were not taken into confidence by Sri Akal Takht or SGPC over the matter. The Delhi government has declared November 24 as a dry day,” he said.
