BramptonGuardian Article: Arrest made in temple attack

Arrest made:. Peel Regional Police arrested and charged a Brampton man with attempted murder Sunday in connection with the stabbing of a local lawyer during a protest outside a temple Friday evening.

Brampton man was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of a prominent local lawyer outside a Sikh temple Friday afternoon.

Sukhwant Singh, 52, has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in the attack on Manjit Mangat, 53, who is still in hospital recovering.

“The victim’s injuries, as serious as they were, he was stabilized in the hospital, but he is still in serious condition,” said Peel Regional Police spokesperson Const. Wayne Patterson.

Singh was held for a bail hearing and will make an appearance in court today, according to police

Mangat, a former judge who is now a Brampton lawyer, was stabbed in the abdomen, thighs and legs and suffered cuts to his face at approximately 3:45 p.m. outside the Sikh Lehar Centre, a temple at Bramsteele Road near Steeles Avenue and Hwy. 410.

A crowd of approximately 150 had gathered to protest a lecture by Darshan Singh, a Sikh preacher who was banished from the religion three months ago by priests in India. The protest turned violent and some 30 to 40 police officers were called to quell the confrontation.

“It was brutal ... he just went outside to calm people down, to tell them the event was cancelled,” Jujhar Mangat, his nephew, said. “The next thing, he was thrown to the ground and viciously attacked.”

Two others were injured and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officers with Peel’s Diversity Relations Unit worked with 22 Division detectives, interviewing several witnesses and ensuring constant contact with temple officials.

The controversial preacher was excommunicated for remarks he made about one of the Sikh gurus while singing hymns at a temple in New York last year.

According to the priests’ edict, Singh, who lives in the Toronto area, is forbidden from speaking at any Sikh institution. But some temples, including the Sikh Lehar Centre, have defied that order and invited him to talk.

There have been large crowds and loud protests by Sikhs at every venue in India and England but no other violence.

Harvans Jandali, president of Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council, condemned the violence, saying “the fight should have never happened at the temple — that’s a sacred place.”

IT PAINS ME TO READ THE ABOVE NEWS

Sikhs are saints & soldiers: They should be warriors of peace first, and must not use force to resolve 'internal' issues or confflict. It is through peace, love, understanding / education and harmony that conflicts are resolved to create an everstanding win/win situation.

I submit to you that after becoming Amritdhari Sikhs most Sikhs 'honour' EXTERNAL rehit but totally ignore / sidestep INNER rehit!

Thus Lust/addiction, wrath/rage/anger, materialistic greed, attachment/worldly infatuation and ego/pride respectively, have become a Sikh way of life!

True Sikhs of the GURUS must adopt / practice the following VIRTUES TO COMBAT THE 5 EVILS :

Wisdom (gyan) : is the complete knowledge of a set of religious principles. It can be achieved by hearing good, thinking good and doing good. A man of wisdom tries to achieve a high moral standard in his life and interaction with others. According to Sikhism, the first steps to wisdom is to consider oneself as an ignorant person who has to learn a lot in life.

Truthful Living (sat) : This is more than 'truth'. It means living according to the way of God i.e. the thoughts should match the words that a person speaks and his actions should also match his words. Truthful living brings a person closer to God.

Justice (niaon) : means freedom and equal oppurtunities for all. Respect for the rights of others and strict absence of attempts to exploit a fellowbeing. Sikhism forbids the desire to loot anothers property. It also strictly instructs the Sikhs to show respect even for the women and children of an enemy.

Temperance (santokh) : means self control which has to be developed through meditation and prayers. A Sikh has to banish evil thoughts from his mind by constantly repeating Gods name and reciting prayers. Torture to the body to develop self-control is not advocated in Sikhism.

Patience (dhiraj) : implies a high level of tolerance and empathy for others. It requires control over ones ego and willingness to overlook anothers weakness or mistakes. It requires that a Sikh should be strongwilled, but kind hearted.

Courage (himmat) : means bravery i.e. absence of fear. It is the ability to stake ones life for ones convictions and for saving others from injustice or cruelty.

Humility (namarta) : is a deliberate denial of pleasure at one's own praise and admiration. It means underplaying ones own strengths and respecting the abilities of others. It is the antidote to 'ahankar'

Contentment (sabar) : means refraining from worldly fears and submitting oneself to the will of God. The typical worldly fears can be fear of death, poverty, disrespect and defeat. It is this virtue that has given the Sikhs the moral strength to withstand the various atrocities committed on their community in the last three centuries.

In conclusion I submit to the sangat that history shows that Sikhs know how to sacrifice their lives for others, but not to live their own lives in peace and harmony, mostly due to the ignorance of the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji ! WHAT A PITY !!!

A crime is a crime, no matter who commits it for whatever reason one may have. This was a disgraceful act which is condemned in any religion which breeds goodness within.

This act shows how some of us have still a long way to go to become open minded by following the SGGS, our only Guru.

This is the time for the Akal Takhat and SGPC to come out and condemn this violent act on an innocent person.

This is a good news! There should be Zero Tolerance for Such Criminal Acts. The criminals/culprits and the people supporting such heinous crimes against humanity should be given an exemplary punishment for bringing Sikhi into disrepute, so that such cowardice is not enacted ever again.

Yes this is good news. Crime is Crime Zero % tolerance.

There are so many Gurudwars in Toronto and everyone have their own Constitution & by laws than why do they want to force their own Rules on other Gurudwar's.<?"urn:<img src=" />

I have watched the SSTV April 4th. One thing I loved out of 1-1/2 hour debate, few families wants to control the whole Gurudwara and they want their way or hiway Sangat Money but they ............

I have very bad experience here in Ontario one of the Gurudwara I will not mention the name but present and past 5years management wants the same bloodshed but I will salute the others who sat at home being a good Sikhs of Guru Gobind Singh ji and let them do whatever they wants to do.

Sorry to say that but no one wants to help the good ones.
