India Age-Limit For Senior Citizens Facilities

The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 defines ‘Senior Citizen’ as a person who has attained the age of 60 years or above. The Act provides for claim for maintenance allowance; geriatric and health care; shelter and protection of life and property.

The Act comes into force upon notification by individual State Governments. 22 States and all Union Territories have notified the Act so far. The Act is not applicable to the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The remaining 5 States have already been requested to notify the Act.

This information was given by Shri. D. Napoleon, the Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

The maintenance allowance to Senior Citizens is all eye wash. When the advanced countries like United States can not provide the full facilities to the Senior Citizens like health care bill. How can we expect that India will provide the facilities to the Senior citizens.
When The Govt cannot pay for healthcare coverage in US then how can we expect from India.
It is all rubbish.

There is a difference where the US is concerned. It is often difficult for a non US citizen to pick up on this because of the political contrasts. Each time full coverage is proposed by a president and political party with a progressive agenda regarding health care in the US it sets out a backlash coming from the other side. So the barriers to full coverage in the US are fueled by emotions running high against it among voters. It boils down to the question of how to set spending priorities for federal budgets. What should the government spend money on?

Health care for generations now has been a hot wire and if a president moves aggressively in that direction he risks political "electrocution." Even the very people who would benefit most among voters will be swayed by anti-health care agitation coming from the conservatives. They will vote against political parties that support full coverage, in droves. What I am saying may sound crazy but it is true. I can remember spending quite a lot of time trying to explain to some people from the UK why voters are against managed health care. They could not imagine a world without full coverage.
