This is third post in a series for us to review and share each of our own understanding of the bani of Aasaa di Vaar in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
Salok mėhlā 1.
ਸਲੋਕ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਨਾਦ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਵੇਦ ॥ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਜੀਅ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਭੇਦ ॥
vismāḏ nāḏ vismāḏ veḏ. vismāḏ jī▫a vismāḏ bẖeḏ.
ਕਈ ਨਾਦ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਵੇਦ; ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਭੇਦ;
Wondrous tunes, wondrous Vedas. Wondrous life forms, wondrous the mysteries

ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਰੰਗ ॥ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਨਾਗੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਜੰਤ ॥
vismāḏ rūp vismāḏ rang. vismāḏ nāge firėh janṯ.
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਰੂਪ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਰੰਗ ਕਈ ਜੰਤ (ਸਦਾ) ਨੰਗੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ; ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਬਣ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
Wondrous forms, wondrous colors. Wondrous many life forms moving naked

ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਪਉਣੁ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਪਾਣੀ ॥ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਅਗਨੀ ਖੇਡਹਿ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
vismāḏ pa▫uṇ vismāḏ pāṇī. vismāḏ agnī kẖedėh vidāṇī.
ਕਿਤੇ ਪਉਣ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਤੇ ਕਈ ਅਗਨੀਆਂ ਅਚਰਜ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ;
Wondrous the wind, wondrous the water. Wondrous the fire, playing strange games.

ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਖਾਣੀ ॥ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸਾਦਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥
vismāḏ ḏẖarṯī vismāḏ kẖāṇī. vismāḏ sāḏ lagėh parāṇī.
ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਖਾਣੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ; ਇਹ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਥੱਰਾਹਟ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
Wondrous the earth, wondrous the forms of creating. Wondrous the people attached to cravings.

ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
vismāḏ sanjog vismāḏ vijog. vismāḏ bẖukẖ vismāḏ bẖog.
ਕਿਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਹੈ, ਕਿਤੇ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਹੈ; ਕਿਤੇ ਭੁੱਖ (ਸਤਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ), ਕਿਤੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੋਗ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਤੇ ਕਈ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਛਕੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ),
Wondrous the unions, wondrous the separations. Wondrous the hunger, wondrous the consumption.

ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਉਝੜ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਰਾਹ ॥
vismāḏ sifaṯ vismāḏ sālāh. vismāḏ ujẖaṛ vismāḏ rāh.
ਕਿਤੇ (ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ) ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਤੇ ਔਝੜ ਹੈ, ਕਿਤੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਹਨ-ਇਹ ਅਚਰਜ ਖੇਡ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੈਰਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
Wondrous the praise, wondrous the contemplation. Wondrous the desolated places, wondrous the paths.

ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਹਾਜਰਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
vismāḏ neṛai vismāḏ ḏūr. vismāḏ ḏekẖai hājrā hajūr.
(ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਰੱਬ) ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ (ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ) ਦੂਰ ਹੈ; (ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ-ਇਸ ਅਚਰਜ ਕੌਤਕ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਝਰਨਾਟ ਛਿੜ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
Wondrous the closeness, wondrous in distance. Wondrous to see the creator here and now.

ਵੇਖਿ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੁਝਣੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ॥੧॥
vekẖ vidāṇ rahi▫ā vismāḏ. Nānak bujẖaṇ pūrai bẖāg. ||1||
(ਰੱਬ ਦੀ) ਅਚਰਜ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਂਬਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਛਿੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਸ ਇਲਾਹੀ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Seeing such strange goings on is so wondrous. Nanak to understand such be in great fortune.

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
Mėhlā 1.
ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦਿਸੈ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਭਉ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
Kuḏraṯ ḏisai kuḏraṯ suṇī▫ai kuḏraṯ bẖa▫o sukẖ sār. Kuḏraṯ pāṯālī ākāsī kuḏraṯ sarab ākār.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਸੁਣੀ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਕਲਾ ਹੈ; ਇਹ ਭਉ ਜੋ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਹੈ। ਪਤਾਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਕਾਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਅਕਾਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਜੋ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਅਚਰਜ ਖੇਡ ਹੈ।
Creation seen, hearing creation, by creation the fear and all comforts. Creation in nether and the sky, creation creates all.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਪੈਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਣੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
Kuḏraṯ veḏ purāṇ kaṯebā kuḏraṯ sarab vīcẖār. Kuḏraṯ kẖāṇā pīṇā painĥaṇ kuḏraṯ sarab pi▫ār.
ਵੇਦ, ਪੁਰਾਣ ਤੇ ਕਤੇਬਾਂ, (ਹੋਰ ਭੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਸੱਤਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਕਲਾ ਹੈ; (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ) ਖਾਣ, ਪੀਣ, ਪੈਨ੍ਹਣ (ਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਰ) ਅਤੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਸਾਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਦਾ ਜਜ਼ਬਾ) ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਹੈ।
By creation the books of Hindus, Muslims and Christians, by creation all discourses. By creation to eat, drink and clothe, in creation all the love.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਜੀਅ ਜਹਾਨ ॥ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਨੇਕੀਆ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਬਦੀਆ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
Kuḏraṯ jāṯī jinsī rangī kuḏraṯ jī▫a jahān. Kuḏraṯ nekī▫ā kuḏraṯ baḏī▫ā kuḏraṯ mān abẖimān.
ਜਾਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਜਿਨਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਰੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਵਰਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਕਿਤੇ ਭਲਾਈ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹਨ; ਕਿਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਆਦਰ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਹੈ-ਇਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਅਚਰਜ ਕੌਤਕ ਹੈ।
By creation the species of types created, in creation the living of the world. In creation the good, in creation the vices, in creation the honor and ego.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਖਾਕੁ ॥ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਕਾਦਿਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪਾਕੀ ਨਾਈ ਪਾਕੁ ॥
Kuḏraṯ pa▫uṇ pāṇī baisanṯar kuḏraṯ ḏẖarṯī kẖāk. Sabẖ ṯerī kuḏraṯ ṯūʼn kāḏir karṯā pākī nā▫ī pāk.
ਪਉਣ, ਪਾਣੀ, ਅੱਗ, ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ (ਆਦਿਕ ਤੱਤ), ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਹਨ। (ਹੇਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਲਾ ਵਰਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਖੇਲ ਦਾਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸੁੱਚੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੁੱਚੀ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ (ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ)ਹੈਂ।
In creation the wind, water and fire, in creation the earth and dust. All your creation, you creator the one doing, holiest of holy the name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਾਕੋ ਤਾਕੁ ॥੨॥
Nānak hukmai anḏar vekẖai varṯai ṯāko ṯāk. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਇਸ ਸਾਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ (ਰੱਖ ਕੇ) (ਸਭ ਦੀ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ, ਇਕੱਲਾ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
Nanak in dictum so observing and doing only all alone.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥
Pa▫oṛī.
ਪਉੜੀ।

ਆਪੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਿ ਕੈ ਹੋਇ ਭਸਮੜਿ ਭਉਰੁ ਸਿਧਾਇਆ ॥ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਆ ਦੁਨੀਦਾਰੁ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਘਤਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
Āpīnĥai bẖog bẖog kai ho▫e bẖasmaṛ bẖa▫ur siḏẖā▫i▫ā. vadā ho▫ā ḏunīḏār gal sangal gẖaṯ cẖalā▫i▫ā.
ਰੱਬਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ-ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅਚਰਜ ਕੁਦਰਤਹੈ)। (ਸਰੀਰ) ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਢੇਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ-ਰੂਪ) ਭਉਰ (ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ) ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ (ਜਦੋਂ) ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਦੇ) ਗਲਵਿਚ ਸੰਗਲ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਤੇ 'ਹੰਸ ਚਲਸੀ ਡੁਮਣਾ')।
Creator self experiences material pleasures, reduced to ashes the soul departs. Engrossed in worldly affairs such passes away, with chains around the neck so led.

ਅਗੈ ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਵਾਚੀਐ ਬਹਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥ ਥਾਉ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਪਉਦੀਈ ਹੁਣਿ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਰੂਆਇਆ ॥
Agai karṇī kīraṯ vācẖī▫ai bahi lekẖā kar samjẖā▫i▫ā. Thā▫o na hovī pa▫uḏī▫ī huṇ suṇī▫ai ki▫ā rū▫ā▫i▫ā.
ਪਰਲੋਕਵਿਚ (ਭਾਵ, ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ, ਵੇਖੋ ਪਉੜੀ ੨) ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਰੂਪ ਕਮਾਈਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਓਥੈ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਹਿਸਾਬ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ)ਸਮਝਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਓਥੇ ਮਾਰ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਢੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ, ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕੂਕ-ਪੁਕਾਰ ਸੁਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
In after life the deeds and honor is accounted for and all so detailed to be recognized. No support as being beaten up and no one to hear the crying.

ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
Man anḏẖai janam gavā▫i▫ā. ||3||
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ (ਵਾਲਾ ਜੀਵ) ਆਪਣਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ-) ਜਨਮ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
Blind mind so wasted such life.

ESSENCE: Guru Nanak Dev ji recognize all that wondrous which surrounds us. Be it rhythms, books of wisdom, life forms; the earth, wind and fire; separations and closeness, a strange feeling to observe all such wondrous items. Guru ji state that in grace one may get to understand all that is behind such.

Guru Nanak Dev ji then relate the part that creation embodies. The creation as a source for earth, sky and beyond, creation as the source of scriptures for various religions, all so many species and forms of life so emanating.

In pauri it is stated how we come and engrossed in material pleasures so depart. What we leave behind as legacy cries out loud our failings while there is no corrections at that point, all gets accounted for and humans so blindly waste away such precious embodiment of life.
