JALANDHAR: Aam Aadmi Party's selection of candidates in Punjab and its decision to set up a special investigation team to probe into 1984 anti-Sikh riots have robbed SAD of its core Sikh issues to fight the ballot battle in the state. The impact of AAP in Punjab would be known only after Lok Sabha poll results are out, but candidates it has fielded in Punjab have ensured that the party is not only trying to take away the traditional issues of SAD but also seeking to strike at devoted Akali vote bank.

AAP fielded senior Supreme Court advocate H S Phoolka after Arvind Kejriwal's short-lived Delhi government decided to set up an SIT probe into 1984 massacre of Sikhs. After this move, SAD is not raising the issue of denial of justice to 1984 victims as it fears that focus on the issue may help AAP.

Till Narendra Modi's rally at Jagraon on February 23, SAD projected itself as the champion of Kutch Sikh farmers' cause. The farmers are facing eviction by Modi government and fighting a case in the Supreme Court against Gujarat government. However, AAP fielded lawyer of the affected farmers Himmat Singh Shergill and Sikh farmers from Gujarat came to Punjab to campaign for him. Realizing that the issue may boomerang on it, SAD dumped the farmers' issue during campaigning. AAP and Shergill happily took up the issue and targeted Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal for his remark that "Sikh farmers in Kutch are very happy".
