SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar on Friday asked former Akal Takht Jathedar Prof Darshan Singh to appear before the Takht like a devout Sikh, without making a hue and cry about it. Reacting to Prof Darshan Singh's claim that he faced a threat to his life in appearing before Akal Takht, Makkar said a Sikh need not fear anything while appearing before the Takht established by sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind.

The Sikh clergy have summoned Prof Darshan Singh for allegedly misleading the Sangat by quoting the Dasam Granth in his preaching despite a ban on the text by Akal Takht.

Makkar, who heard the views of a pro-Nanakshahi Calendar panel at a meeting regarding proposed changes in the calendar, said the SGPC would like to see only the essential amendments without compromising the basic structure of the calendar.

He said a joint committee of those for and against changes in the calendar would be set up to hammer out an amicable solution to the controversy.

At a press conference, Makkar said the issue of a separate gurdwara committee for Haryana was as good as dead, which was evident from the fact that for the first time in recent years no one had raised the issue at the SGPC general house meeting on Wednesday.
