Amritsar, Punjab: A Tarn Taran family alleged on Friday that 75year-old Subegh Singh has died at the PGIMER due to police torture and demanded action against the officials.
Baldev Singh, son of the deceased, said that Tarn Taran police picked up his father from Patti Civil Hospital, where he was admitted after an attack over a land dispute, on June 26 and tortured him.
Baldev alleged that Khemkaran SHO Surinder Singh, a relative of their rival Ajit Singh, had been forcing them to vacate 12 kanal 16 marla agricultural land at Bhura Karimpura village. “When we resisted and said that we had been tilling the land for 33 years and were its lawful owners, the SHO warned us of adverse consequences,“ said Baldev. He said the SHO had the support of Akali MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha. “We will write to Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and DGP P.S. Gill and demand strict action against the guilty officials,“ he added.
The SHO denied the charge and said that the police had nothing to do with the death of Subegh Singh. “There was a dispute between Baldev Singh and Ajit Singh over agricultural land. We only registered cases against both the parties and arrested Subegh Singh when he was discharged from Patti hospital,“ he claimed
