What is happening in Bagladesh today is in a way the script that was written for India durning the farmers protest.

The farmer protest was an attack on regime change. ,But the GOI chose strategic restraint to ensure Dhaka style revolution did not take place .

Members of the interim government led by Noble Laureate Prof Mohammed Yunus will take over today three days after the cabinet was dissolved following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina. After sharing the information with journalists, army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman yesterday said the oath-taking ceremony is likely to be held at 8:00pm in presence of some 400 dignitaries. He hinted that the interim government may have 15 members for now. He, however, did not disclose their names and the possible tenure of the government. General Waker-Uz-Zaman hoped that normalcy would return within three to four days as the situation across the country is improving significantly. Those involved in the crimes committed over the past few days will not be spared and legal action will be taken against them, he said.
The army chief briefed the media at the Army Headquarters yesterday, two days after Hasina resigned and fled the country amid an upspring. On Tuesday night, President Mohammed Shahabuddin gave his consent to the proposal of the key student protest organisers for making Prof Yunus the interim government chief. Since then, the people waited to know when the government would take charge and bring the prevailing situation under its control. Yesterday, General Waker-Uz-Zaman said he had talked to Prof Yunus.
"I felt very good talking to him. It seemed to me that he is very eager to take up the responsibility. I'm certain that he will be successful in taking us to a democratic process, and that we will benefit from it."
General Waker-Uz-Zaman said they have discussed with political parties and protest organisers about making Prof Yunus the interim government chief. He said they talked to the president about it and made the proposal. He added that Prof Yunus will reach Bangladesh today. General Waker-Uz-Zaman hoped that Prof Yunus would get support from all political parties and students, and he would be successful in discharging his duties. "The navy chief, the air force chief and I … We all will support him," he said.
He praised students and volunteers working to maintain traffic on the city streets in the absence of traffic police and to clean different vandalised sites and requested them to continue the good work.

He said students, following his request, also worked to prevent looting and other criminal activities committed outside Dhaka. The army chief said he talked to commanders and general officers commanding (GOC) yesterday and came to know that the situation was improving significantly. He urged people not to believe any rumors involving the army.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman said work is on to revamp the police force as a new inspector general of police has already been appointed and hoped that police personnel would start performing their duties soon.
"I want to assure that the army, navy, and air force were with the people and will be with them," he said.
Responding to a query of a reporter when the interim government members can take the oath, the army chief said they were trying their best to hold the event today.
He said there was a proposal to hold the programme in the evening, but it would be tight given that Prof Yunus will reach Dhaka around 2:10pm. "In that case, we may hold the programme at 8:00pm."
When his comment was sought about the people's concern over the recent incidents of looting and vandalism, General Waker-Uz-Zaman said he has taken responsibility of all people and sought cooperation from political leaders in this regard as there were possibilities of such incidents during the transition of power.
"They [political leaders] assured me of their best possible cooperation. Even though some incidents took place and there are some reasons behind it. The situation, however, is getting normal."
He said police personnel were not on the ground and it was not possible to fill the void with the army personnel. However, the army personnel have been trying their best and they rescued thousands of people, police personnel and are guarding different important establishments like the airport, and the secretariat, said General Waker-Uz-Zaman. "I'm very sorry and embarrassed for what has taken place in the first one or two days."
Apart from army personnel, navy and air force personnel are working, he said. "We have tried our best. But still some incidents happened. It is simply because we did not have enough strength. But I'm sure when the police force gets revamped, the void will easily be filled," he said.
"But I want to say that we will try our best to bring those involved in such [criminal] activities to book," he added. Asked whether he had any plan to increase the number of the force on the ground, the army chief said, "All the personnel we have in the military have already been deployed and they are working."
Responding to another question, he said, "Politicians asked me to take the responsibility [of people's safety].
"Somebody has to take it [responsibility]. There was no one to take it and thus I shouldered the responsibility. I have to take the responsibility if there is any failure here. I have tried my best and normalcy will return within a very short time," he said.
"But we have a lot to do. Give me some more time."

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has told Reuters that 200-300 homes, mainly those owned by Hindus, and businesses had been targeted since Monday. About 15-20 Hindu temples had been vandalised and 40-odd people injured, though not seriously, the organisation's general secretary Rana Dasgupta said
Meanwhile, a Hindu association in Bangladesh claimed that hundreds of Hindu houses, businesses and temples have been vandalised since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.

Hindus constitute about 8 per cent of Bangladesh's 170 million people and have historically largely supported Hasina's Awami League party, which identifies as largely secular, instead of the opposition bloc that includes a hardline Islamist party.
Sheikh Hasina's plan to travel to London has hit a roadblock over some “uncertainties” and she is unlikely to move out of India for the next couple of days, media reports claimed. Hasina who landed at the Hindon airport in India on Monday ina in a C-130J military transport aircraft hours after resigning as the prime minister, has been shifted to an unspecified location under tight security.
Muhammad Yunus was appointed to lead Bangladesh's interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin after he held meetings with student leaders and chiefs of the three military services, local media reported late, citing a statement and officials from the president's office.
Muhammad Yunus, 84, and his Grameen Bank, a microcredit organisation, won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for work to lift millions out of poverty by granting small loans of under $100 to the rural poor of Bangladesh.
The student leaders had said they wanted Muhammad Yunus as the chief adviser to the interim government and a spokesperson for Yunus said he agreed. Yunus is in Paris for a medical procedure and is expected to return to Dhaka soon.
In a disturbing incident, doctors at Joshor General Hospital confirmed they counted 24 bodies in Zabir International Hotel, while surviving hotel staff feared more bodies could be found inside the debris. This hostel was burnt by hooligans because it belonged to a close associate of Hasina
Media reports suggested unidentified mob, opposed to the Awami League (AL) regime, set the ground floor of the hotel on fire which quickly spread to the upper floors.
There were almost identical reports from across the country where the angry mob simultaneously vandalised residences and business establishments of many Awami League leaders and activists, including its central office in Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
"Our state's resources are being wasted. This country is ours; we have to build this country," Khaleda Zia said during a meeting with Maulana Mamunul Haque, secretary general of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, on Tuesday.
Neighbouring India, now sheltering Sheikh Hasina after she fled on Monday from deadly protests after 15 years in power, said what was “particularly worrying was that minorities, their businesses and temples also came under attack at multiple locations”.
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) said 200-300 mainly Hindu homes and businesses had been vandalised since Monday, and 15-20 Hindu temples damaged. Up to 40 people have been injured though not seriously, its general secretary, Rana Dasgupta, told news agency Reuters.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as the head of an interim government on Thursday evening — mere 3 days after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina amid deadly protests. Meanwhile, Indian remains on alert amid developments in the neighbouring country. "The Bangladeshis had gathered at the border, but none were able to enter India as the border was completely sealed. They were later taken back by the BGB," a BSF official said.
Bangladesh is undergoing an unprecedented crisis as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had been in power for 15 years, resigned and fled the country amid escalating protests. What began as a demonstration against a jobs quota system has rapidly escalated into a massive upheaval against her and her government. Over the past few tumultuous weeks, more than 300 people have lost their lives.
BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been released in a significant turn of events. Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening, but her plans regarding whether she will remain in Delhi or relocate elsewhere remain unclear.
Muhammad Yunus held a brief press conference after taking oath to laud those who had helped bring about the ‘rebirth of the nation’. “I express all my appreciation and gratitude to these young people who made it happen and who are responsible for bringing about the rebirth of the nation," he said.
He stopped to fight back tears, describing the death of an “extraordinarily brave" young man who went up against the police during the crackdown.
More than 50 noted personalities from West Bengal wrote to Bangladesh president Mohammed Shahabuddin and PM Muhammad Yunus and urged them to ensure the safety of all sections of society. Among the signatories of the letter were filmmaker Aparna Sen, educationist Pabitra Sarkar and former Supreme Court judge Ashok Ganguly.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy blamed the Pakistani intelligence agency (ISI) for fueling the ongoing unrest in the country. "I am quite certain given the circumstantial evidence; I suspect Pakistan ISI’s involvement. The attacks and protests were very coordinated, meticulously planned, and intentional efforts to keep inflaming the situation through social media. No matter what the government did to control the situation, they kept trying to worsen it," he told PTI. Sajeeb Wazed Joy said on Thursday that his mother would return to the country as soon as democracy is restored. He added that it had not yet been decided whether she will be back as a "retired or active" politician. “Yes, it is true that I had said she wouldn’t return to Bangladesh. But a lot has changed in the last two days following continuous attacks on our leaders and party workers across the country. Now we are going to do whatever it takes to keep our people safe; we are not going to leave them alone. Awami League is the largest and oldest political party in Bangladesh, so we cannot just walk away from our people. She will definitely return to Bangladesh once democracy is restored," he told PTI over the phone.

America loves regime change.

Muhammad Yunus is a puppet of the CIA. CIA has orchestrated the Bangladeshi coup. But CIA will find it difficult to control the madness of the Islamic radicals. All eyes on China now.

Thd response from US has been negative means there appears some collaboration with Pakistan in this revolt. But what is the connivance of US has not yet come out clearly. In this context hand of USA cannot be denied. However now the main problem which has emerged is Muslims burning Hindu homes nd killing Hindu personalities. Reciprocation from UP Hindu has resulted in attacks on Muslim homes calling them Bangladeshis. There are number of bangladeshis in India. Their safety is in danger in view of the new development. In view of this both the government should join hands to stop this madness of killing, looting idoand destruction on the name of pseudo-religion.

Floods wreaked more havoc in India’s northeast and neighboring Bangladesh’s eastern region, raising this week’s total death toll to 30, officials and media reports said Friday.Rain stopped in many parts of Bangladesh on Friday and weather officials in Dhaka said the waters had started receding in some areas, but said the flooding would not be over for days.
In India’s Tripura state, eight more people died in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 19 since Monday, said a state disaster management official on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media. Earlier, 11 people were reported dead. In Bangladesh, seven more people died in the last 24 hours, Dhaka-based Ekhon TV reported Friday. Earlier, four deaths were reported in raging waters flooding downstream from India, and amid incessant rains in the country’s eastern region.

Bangladeshi non-government organization BRAC said in a statement that up to 3 million people remained stranded as fast-moving water inundated vast areas of farmland, destroying livelihoods, homes, and crops. It said many remained without electricity, food or water. Other media reports said up to 4.5 million people have been affected in the delta nation of 170 million people.

The aftermath of the political crisis in Bangladesh has once again made the Hindu community in the country a soft target. The student protest quickly became an excuse for Islamists to inflict violence against Hindus. The declining Hindu population, which was 7.95 per cent in 2022, is a clear indication of the tragic plight of the community.
Despite more than 200 attacks on religious minorities, including Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians, and damage to about 20 temples since 5 August, the intelligentsia and global news coverage have portrayed the plight of Bangladeshi Hindus as just another case of minority oppression. This oversimplification does a disservice to the victims. Each act of oppression has its own root cause and deserves to be discussed on its own merits. There is an undeniable underlying hatred toward the community, and it is crucial to understand where this sentiment stems from.

A senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader has blamed an 'ecosystem of former diplomats, bureaucrats, politicians, and think tanks' for creating a 'bogeyman' to mislead the Indian establishment into believing that Indo-Bangla relations would deteriorate without the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League.
29dhaka.jpg

Days after India raised the issue of the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury of the Khalida Zia-led BNP said it is an 'internal matter of the country' but maintained that Bangladesh wants strong ties with India, its next-door neighbour.
Chowdhury's party, the BNP, is an arch-rival of the Awami League (AL), headed by Hasina, who resigned and fled to India on August 5 in the wake of the massive student protests across the country.
An interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, assumed charge on August 8 will continue till fresh elections are held. In an interview with PTI in Dhaka, Chowdhury minced no words against the 'ecosystem of former diplomats, officials, politicians, and think tanks' for misleading the Indian establishment on the 'hard reality' of Bangladesh and said this ecosystem has destroyed Indo-Bangla relations.
"This ecosystem has created a bogeyman that if there is no Awami League, there will be security-related issues for India; if there is no Sheikh Hasina, then the country would go into the hands of fundamentalists; if there is no Awami League, then the Hindus in Bangladesh would be in danger.
"This is a completely false and deliberate narrative. These people need to wake up now. Bangladesh is one of the most liberal countries; here Hindus and Muslims have lived together for ages," he said.
Across Bangladesh, the minority Hindu population has faced vandalisation of their business and properties and devastation of Hindu temples in the students' violence that ensued for days following the ouster of the Hasina government.
"There can be aberrations, but no government in Bangladesh supports attacks on its minorities. The Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees equal rights to everybody, and above all, we don't believe in this minority and majority concept. We are sorry to say this, but on the question of minorities, this is an internal matter of Bangladesh," Chowdhury said.
"How can others comment on the issue of minorities in our country? How does this come up in diplomatic relations? This is our internal matter. We never complain about what happens to Indian minorities, so no one should comment on the issue of minorities here," he told PTI.
Urging India to keep the 'baggage of the past (BNP's regime in the early 2000s) behind', Chowdhury said: "India has to understand the pulse of the people of Bangladesh. The relationship has to be with the people of Bangladesh."
"Why does New Delhi have to depend on one person or family? When it comes to Indo-Bangla relations? India has put all the eggs in one basket. That was a mistake on their part," he declared.
"You cannot change your neighbour and you should have good relations with your neighbour," he said and added Bangladesh wants the best of relations with India, as it is a neighbour.
The former commerce minister during the BNP regime accused the erstwhile Awami League regime of indulging in rampant corruption and working against the nation's interest vis-a-vis various bilateral treaties.
"As they had captured power through fraudulent elections, they had no accountability to the people of Bangladesh. They laundered over $100 billion from many mega projects and treaties, which were against the country's interests," he said.
He also underlined the need to relook 'those questionable bilateral treaties, agreements, and contracts as the truth has to come out'.
When asked if any bilateral treaty with India, which has faced criticism in Bangladesh, will be cancelled or suspended, Chowdhury, whose party BNP is tipped to be the front runner for the next elections as and when held, said: "We are not singling out India or any other country."
"But all the questionable bilateral treaties and agreements will have to be re-examined and, if needed, also reviewed. Nothing is going to be suspended or cancelled, as it is the government of the country which signs a treaty. But if it is not in the interest of Bangladesh, then it will be reviewed. This is an umbrella issue," he said.
Replying to a query about the popular perception of BNP regimes in the past not being India-friendly, Chowdhury said, "These are wrong perceptions. India has to leave the baggage of the past behind and both countries have to work together."
He also said that being vocal about his own country's interest doesn't make him anti-India.

lg.php

Speaking about the ongoing 'India out' campaign, which he claimed is not a programme by any political party but by the common people of Bangladesh who see India as 'an enabler of the autocratic regime'.
"So, now in Bangladesh, it's seen as Sheikh Hasina plus India versus the people of Bangladesh. That is why there is this anger against India, as it is considered an ally of the Awami League," he said and added, "Hasina taking shelter in India is also not seen in a good light in Dhaka."

Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh's first woman prime minister, who restored democracy after a span of military rule and dominated the country's politics for decades, died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. She was 80.

Zia's demise came less than six weeks before Bangladesh will vote in the parliamentary elections for the first time after a massive student-led uprising led to the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Zia and Hasina were political rivals.
"My mother is no more," Zia's elder son and Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said early in the morning.
Zia was a three-time prime minister and held the position of chairperson of BNP. Her personal physician, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, said she breathed her last early on Tuesday while receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
Zia's family members, including her elder son Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter Zaima, were present at the hospital. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was also at the hospital.
Bangladesh's interim government chief, Muhammad Yunus, described former prime minister Zia as a "great guardian" whose role in the country's democratic journey would be "remembered forever."
The BNP said she passed away at 6:00 am local time, "just after Fajr prayer."
Zia's funeral will be held on Wednesday after Zohr prayers at Parliament's South Plaza and the adjoining Manik Mia Avenue, Law Advisor Asif Nazrul said.
She will later be laid to rest with full state honours beside the grave of her husband, former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, Nazrul told reporters after a special meeting of the interim government's Advisory Council at the state guest house Jamuna.
Top leaders of several countries condoled the death of Zia.
"Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on social media. "We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace."
In the evening, India announced that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will travel to Dhaka to attend Zia's funeral.
In a televised address to the nation, Chief Adviser Yunus announced a three-day state mourning and a one-day general holiday.
“At the death of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, I declare three days of state mourning and a one-day general holiday tomorrow on the day of her Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers),” he said.
Yunus urged people to maintain discipline and order during the funeral prayers and the observance of mourning across the country.
Zia had been suffering from multiple complex and chronic health conditions, including liver and kidney complications, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and infection-related problems.
She was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23 for routine tests, during which doctors detected a chest infection and decided to keep her under observation.
Her condition worsened on November 27, prompting her transfer to the hospital's Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
In the early hours of Tuesday, Dr. Hossain, who was also a member of the medical board overseeing her treatment, described her condition as “very critical.”
As her condition deteriorated, Rahman, along with other family members, rushed to the hospital.
Zia last appeared in public on November 21, when she joined the Armed Forces Day reception at Dhaka Cantonment.
Yunus said the nation had lost not just a political leader but a towering stateswoman who represented an important chapter in Bangladesh's history.
"With her demise, the nation has lost one of its great guardians," he said.
In a statement posted on social media, BNP acting chief Rahman reflected on his mother's political legacy and personal sacrifices.

"To many, she was the leader of the nation, an uncompromising leader, the Mother of Democracy, the Mother of Bangladesh. Today, the country mourns the loss of a guiding presence that shaped its democratic aspirations.
“To me, Khaleda Zia was a tender and loving mother who devoted her entire life to the country and its people,” he wrote.
The US, Pakistan, China, Germany, Australia, and the European Union (EU) also expressed deep sorrow over the death of Zia and paid tribute to her political legacy and role in shaping the country's democratic journey.
Party leaders, activists, supporters and Zia's admirers crowded the Evercare Hospital premises soon after her death was announced, while the BNP said it would hold a week-long mourning.
BNP has emerged as the forerunner in the upcoming February 12 general election in the changed political landscape, with the absence of the disbanded Awami League of deposed premier Hasina. Its former ally Jamaat is now emerging as BNP's main rival.
In a condolence message posted on the Awami League's X account, her arch-rival Hasina, who is in exile in India, described Zia as a significant figure in Bangladesh's political history.
“As the first woman prime minister of Bangladesh, and for her role in the struggle to establish democracy, her contributions to the nation were significant and will be remembered,” she said.
BNP had earlier said that if physically well, Zia would be the next prime minister if the party is voted to power in the February 12 election, otherwise Rahman is their nominee for the position.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Yunus' advisory council, effectively the cabinet, has called an emergency meeting after Zia's death, and he was invited to join the meeting.
Zia's political journey, spanning over four decades, was one of tremendous highs and lows: from leading a major party and governing the country to being convicted on corruption charges and later receiving a presidential pardon.
Her rise as a public figure is widely viewed as accidental. A decade after becoming a widow at the age of 35, she assumed the role of prime minister, but her entry into politics was not planned.
She was largely unfamiliar with the political world until she was seemingly dragged into it following the assassination of her husband, President Ziaur Rahman, a military strongman turned politician, in an abortive army coup on May 30, 1981.
Before this, she was merely regarded as the wife of a general and later the First Lady. However, she quickly made her mark as the top leader of the BNP, the party her husband had founded in 1978.
She was enrolled as a primary member on January 3, 1982.
By March of the following year, she became the party's vice president, and in May 1984, BNP's Chairperson - a position she held until her death. Her main rival throughout this period was Hasina, the chief of the Awami League.
After the 1982 military coup by the then Army chief Gen HM Ershad, Zia initiated a movement for restoring democracy.
After the fall of the Ershad regime in December 1990, a caretaker government headed by Chief Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed conducted the elections in February 1991.
BNP emerged as the party with the majority to the surprise of many who believed the Awami League would win the polls. The new parliament amended the constitution, switching to a parliamentary system from a presidential form of government, and Zia became the first woman prime minister in Bangladesh and second in the Muslim world after Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto.
BNP was re-elected to power in 1996, but the government lasted only 12 days as the Awami League staged vigorous street campaigns. Zia's government quit after introducing the caretaker government system.
Though BNP lost the fresh election in June 1996, the party won 116 seats, becoming the largest opposition in the country's history.
In 1999, Zia formed a four-party coalition and launched agitations protesting the then-ruling Awami League government. She was re-elected in 2001. In 2006, she stepped down from office, passing power to a caretaker administration.
In September 2007, she was arrested on what her party claimed were “baseless charges of corruption”.
Zia's electoral popularity can be gauged by the fact that she never lost in any constituency. "She was elected in five separate parliamentary constituencies in the elections of 1991, 1996 and 2001, while in 2008, she won in all three constituencies from where she contested,” a BNP leader said.
Zia was born on August 15, 1946, to Taiyaba and Iskandar Majumdar in Dinajpur district in undivided India. Her father migrated from Jalpaiguri, where the family ran a tea business, to what was East Pakistan after the partition.

Bangladesh violence: Hindu shop owner stabbed, set ablaze; fourth attack in two weeks

The victim, identified as Khokan Chandra, sustained serious burn injuries after he was beaten, stabbed, and set on fire, managing to escape only by jumping into a nearby pond.

A Hindu trader narrowly escapes death in Bangladesh amid spate of minority attacks. A Hindu businessman narrowly survived a brutal mob attack in Bangladesh, marking the fourth reported assault on members of the minority community in the past two weeks. The victim, identified as Khokan Chandra, sustained serious burn injuries after he was beaten, stabbed, and set on fire, managing to escape only by jumping into a nearby pond.

The attack occurred on New Year’s Eve as Khokan, 40, was returning home after closing his pharmacy shop in Keurbhanga Bazar. According to reports, he was intercepted around 9 pm in the Tiloi area, where a group of miscreants allegedly waylaid and assaulted him.

The attackers stabbed Khokan multiple times with sharp weapons, poured petrol over his body, and set him ablaze. He managed to leap into a nearby pond, after which locals rescued him and rushed him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. Doctors have said his condition remains critical. Police have not yet confirmed the motive behind the attack or identified those responsible.

The assault has heightened anxiety within Bangladesh’s Hindu community, which has reported a series of violent incidents in recent weeks following the murder of anti-India youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Protests over Hadi’s death have taken on an anti-India tone amid allegations that the killers fled across the border. even though the convict has already said that he is in Dubai and not in India.

The latest incident follows another killing reported just a day earlier in Mymensingh, where a Hindu man, Bajendra Biswas, was shot dead while on security duty at a garment factory. Local reports said the assailant, Noman Mia, asked Biswas, “Do I shoot you?” before opening fire.

Both Biswas and Mia were members of the Ansar Bahini, a paramilitary auxiliary force under Bangladesh’s Home Ministry tasked with community policing. They were deployed as security guards at a Sultana Sweaters Limited factory along with 20 others when the shooting took place.

Earlier incidents have included the lynching of Amrit Mondal over alleged extortion and the killing of factory worker Dipu Chandra Das over blasphemy allegations, cases that have drawn international criticism over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
India has said it has conveyed grave concern over what it described as “unremitting hostility” against minorities in Bangladesh.

Miscreants tried to kill Hindu businessman Khokon Chandra Das since he recognized the attackers, charged his wife, Seema Das, on Thursday. Bangladesh police have so far identified two members of the gang that attempted to murder Das.

Khokan Chandra Das, a middle-aged businessman running a pharmacy at Keurbhanga Bazar in Bangladesh's Shariatpur district, was attacked by a violent group on New Year's Eve. Das was returning home after the day's business when the attack happened.

According to Seema Das, the attackers might have tried to kill her husband since he recognized them. "My husband closes the shop every night and returns home with the money from the day's sales. Terrorists attacked him on Wednesday night. He recognized two of the attackers," Prothom Alo reported, quoting Seema.
According to the publication, Seema suspects the mob might have tried to kill her husband since he identified them. Seema said they do not have any enemies or disputes with anybody in the locality.
On Wednesday evening, while returning after closing his shop, a violent mob waylaid Khokan and attacked him. Khokan was attacked while he was passing through the Tiloi area, at around 9 pm, on Wednesday. The mob allegedly hit him, stabbed Khokan with sharp weapons, and set him on fire after pouring petrol all over his body. Reportedly, Khokan jumped into a pond nearby and survived the attack. Khokan suffered serious burn injuries in the incident.
"We don't understand why the terrorists suddenly targeted my husband and attacked him," a terrified Seema told Prothom Alo. According to doctors, Khokan has grievous burn injuries on his hands, face, and rear of his head. He has been taken to the hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment, doctors said.

According to the Bangladesh police, they have identified two attackers, and efforts are underway to nab them. "Efforts are being made to identify who else is involved in the incident," Damudya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Rabiul Haque told Prothom Alo.

The attack against Khokan is the fourth case of targeted violence against minority members in the neighboring country since the beginning of December. A fresh bout of violence erupted in Bangladesh after the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi.
Last week, Amrit Mondal, a 29-year-old youth, was allegedly lynched to death in Bangladesh's Kalimohar. According to Bangladeshi officials, Mondal was allegedly attacked amid an extortion bid.
Earlier in December, Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, was killed in Bangladesh, allegedly over false blasphemy charges. Despite India's concerns, Bangladesh authorities maintained that they were isolated incidents and India was trying to project them as a systemic attack against minorities.

China-Bangladesh-Pakistan nexus- A cause of conceren for India

'Should China's interest in the Teesta River projects be approved, it would likely result in heightened Chinese presence near the Siliguri corridor.'

"Regular discussions between top military leaders from Pakistan and Bangladesh suggest a more intense strategic planning phase, potentially resulting in the rapid execution of decisions made during these talks," says Shreyas Deshmukh, researcher at the National Security Programme of the Delhi Policy Group.
His work experience spans subjects, including geopolitical developments, traditional and non-traditional security, and socio-political stability in South Asia.
"India should keep its defence ties with Bangladesh and continue joint military drills. Proactive back-channel defence diplomacy could help mitigate the effects of the increasing strategic influence of Pakistan and China in Bangladesh," Mr. Deshmukh mentions.
Regular discussions between top military leaders from Pakistan and Bangladesh suggest a more intense strategic planning phase, potentially resulting in the rapid execution of decisions made during these talks.
The ongoing visit of Bangladesh's Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan to Pakistan includes discussions about integrating air defence radar systems, which might pose a substantial strategic security risk to India.
High-ranking former Pakistani military officials recently toured Bangladesh army and navy bases situated near the Indian border.
The security situation in the Chittagong Hills has deteriorated over the past year. The instances of drones originating from Bangladesh being sighted and captured by Indian agencies, as well as the Bangladesh police's seizure of 20,000 uniforms belonging to the Kuki-Chin National Front in May 2025, have elicited apprehension within India.
The aforementioned developments, together with shifts in bilateral and multilateral relations, as seen in the case of Bangladesh-Pakistan-China, are alarming.
China has expressed interest in Teesta River management projects. Should the project be approved, it would likely result in a heightened Chinese presence near the Siliguri corridor.
However, with the current interim government in charge, it's too soon to predict Bangladesh's future course. Probably, post-election, India will establish and implement its policy decisions on these matters.
In the meantime, India should keep its defence ties with Bangladesh and continue joint military drills. Proactive back-channel defence diplomacy could help mitigate the effects of the increasing strategic influence of Pakistan and China in Bangladesh.

While the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh are a domestic matter, they represent major human rights violations in accordance with global norms. Thus, this should not be regarded as a selective bias if India addresses this issue at an official level.
The situation in Bangladesh, where Hindus are deliberately targeted and blasphemy accusations are used as a cover, is a serious concern, particularly because it echoes the conditions in Pakistan.
After the change of government, the targeting of not only Hindus but also other Muslim minority groups has increased. This action could initiate a new outflow of people fleeing the country.
Given the instability of Bangladesh's eastern border with Myanmar, India is the most accessible place of refuge. This movement of people brings genuine refugees and also other undesirable individuals into the already unstable eastern border regions of India.
Myanmar, along with neighbouring areas of Bangladesh, is turning into a key location for the illicit trade of drugs, illegal arms, and human trafficking.
The Border Security Force and Indian security agencies might face a significant challenge in managing this situation. Given the anti-Indian stance of the current Bangladeshi government, which could influence the actions of the Border Guards, the possibility of border conflicts remains.
A decline in relations between two states has repercussions across the board. Sports are not something that can be exempt.
The state's collective psyche is at play here, and it doesn't separate its emotions depending on the nature of relationships; instead, it seeks to apply them universally, be it between individuals, culturally, or strategically.

A single leader's or government's actions don't fully define the relationship between two nations. This relationship characterizes how different generations interact in various fields. The current relationship between India and Bangladesh appears strained, possibly due to public sentiment and the specific policy decisions of the interim government's leadership.
However, the preliminary damage to the relationship is not extensive and can be rectified swiftly.
The validity of Bangladeshi elections has consistently been challenged. We can't rule out the chance of improved relations between India and Bangladesh after the elections.
Public opinion polls show the BNP in the lead, and some of its prominent members have stated they intend to foster positive relations with India.

The victory of the BNP in the elections is still uncertain because student and Islamic parties have formed a political alliance. While the BNP has historically been linked to Pakistan, the party's current leaders will likely strive for balanced relations given the existing geopolitical and economic situation.

Bangladesh election results: BNP heads for landslide win, Tarique Rahman set to become PM

Source: PTI

Tarique Rahman will be Bangladesh's first male prime minister in 35 years.

13tarique-rahman1.jpg

Key Points

  • According to multiple media reports, the BNP won over 151 seats in the 300-seat parliament.
  • Tarique Rahman, son of Khaleda Zia, is expected to become the next prime minister if the BNP wins.
  • The Election Commission deployed nearly 1 million security personnel to ensure security during the elections.
  • Voter turnout was a topic of debate, with the Election Commission dismissing allegations of manipulation.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party was Friday cruising towards a sweeping victory in the landmark parliamentary polls in the country and is all set to return to power after a gap of two decades.
The elections assumed significance as they were held after a period of tumultuous political vacuum, instability, and fragile security situation, including widespread attacks on minorities after the student-led protests brought down the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
It is becoming increasingly clear that BNP's top leader, Tarique Rahman, is set to become the prime minister to replace the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
According to media reports, the BNP has bagged more than 212 seats in the 300-seat parliament and is likely to win more seats. The Jamaat-e-Islami, a hardline party known to be close to Islamabad, was heading or winning in around 77 seats.
The Awami League party of Hasina has been barred from contesting the polls.
"The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to form the government after victory in the majority of seats," BNP's media cell posted on X.
The Election Commission is yet to make a formal announcement.

PM Modi congratulates Tarique Rahman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the very few leaders to congratulate Rahman on the BNP's performance.
"I convey my warm congratulations to Mr Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh," Modi said in a post on X.

"India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals," he said.
On its part, the BNP thanked Modi for recognizing the verdict of the elections and hoped that the relations between the two countries will be strengthened under the new government.
"We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for congratulating our leader, Tarique Rahman. It is great that a democratic country is supposed to recognize the verdict of the people, and Mr. Narendra Modi has done this. We thank him," senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan said.
India-Bangladesh relations witnessed a severe strain after the collapse of the Hasina-led government.
According to an EC spokesperson, results in several seats are still being processed and are likely to be announced in a few hours.

US welcomes Bangladesh election results

The US Embassy in Dhaka has congratulated the people of Bangladesh in advance on what it described as a successful national election, extending special recognition to BNP and Rahman for their "historic victory."
"Congratulations to the people of Bangladesh on a successful election and to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Tarique Rahman on your historic victory. The United States looks forward to working with you to realize shared goals of prosperity and security for both our countries," its social media post read.
The election was seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami, in the absence of ousted premier Hasina's now-banned Awami League.
BNP was in power earlier between 2001 and 2006, when Jamaat was its crucial partner, with two of its leaders serving as ministers.
The voting for the 13th parliamentary elections was held on Thursday along with a referendum on the implementation of a complex 84-point reform package, known as the July National Charter.

Jamaat claims 'result tampering.'

Meanwhile, Jamaat has raised allegations of "abnormal delays" and "result tampering," warning that it would launch a tough movement if the public mandate were "snatched away."
Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission building early morning, Jamaat's assistant secretary general, Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, alleged that returning officers were intentionally delaying results to favor a "particular party."
"In the seats contested by our top leaders, results should have been declared by 8 pm or 9 pm according to the signed sheets given to polling agents," Zubair said.
Jamaat's major ally in an 11-party right-wing alliance, the National Citizen Party (NCP), floated with interim government chief Yunus last year, also brought allegations of "result tampering and planned fraud" in multiple Dhaka seats in particular.
"Psychological pressure and administrative manipulation were being used to overturn results, particularly in constituencies contested by top leaders of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance," NCP spokesman and party's election committee chairman Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said in a predawn briefing.
Bhuiyan, who until recently served as an adviser or minister in Yunus' interim cabinet, particularly alleged discrepancies in a Dhaka constituency, claiming that although NCP candidate Nahid Islam was leading by nearly 6,000 votes, the returning officer showed a margin of only 1,500 votes in the seat.

Tarique Rahman set to become 1st male PM in 35 years

The BNP had earlier announced that if it wins the election, then its chairman and former premier Khaleda Zia's son, Tarique Rahman, would be the next prime minister of Bangladesh.
If the party wins, Rahman will be Bangladesh's first male prime minister in 35 years.
"We are confident of forming the government by winning more than two-thirds of seats," BNP's central election steering committee spokesman Mahdi Amin told a media briefing in the early hours of Friday.
Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh in December last year after over 17 years in self-exile, asked party leaders and activists to offer special prayers across the country after mid-day 'Juma' prayers instead of holding victory rallies.

EC dismisses manipulation charges

The Election Commission announced on Friday that the voter turnout for the polls was 59.44 percent. It also dismissed allegations of manipulation regarding voters' appearances in polling centers.
Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah on Friday said the spontaneous and massive participation of people in the election proved that 'we are ultimately victorious as a nation.'
"We had only one commitment to the nation: to conduct a neutral election. We have tried our best to ensure that. We are deeply grateful to the people of the country as they participated spontaneously in this massive arrangement. This has proved that we are ultimately victorious as a nation."
On Thursday evening, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasur Uddin said, "There were debates over turnout percentages in past elections as well. Please don't question it now."
He said variations were natural as results from several thousand polling centers arrived at different times.
More than 2,000 candidates, including a number of independents, were in the fray for 299 of the 300 parliamentary constituencies that went to the polls.
Polling for one seat was postponed due to the death of a candidate.
The Election Commission made elaborate security arrangements for the elections, deploying nearly 1 million security personnel—the largest-ever in the country's electoral history.

Following their recent election victory, the BNP is intensifying its efforts to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India to face trial, underscoring the complex political dynamics between the two nations.

Key Points

  • The BNP is seeking the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India to face trial in Bangladesh.
  • The BNP emphasises the importance of equal and respectful relations with India and other neighboring countries.
  • Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity related to the 2024 uprising.
  • The Awami League was barred from the election due to ongoing investigations and a ban imposed by the interim government.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which secured a landslide victory in the general elections, on Friday reiterated its firm stance on seeking the extradition of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India to face trial.

"The foreign minister has already persuaded the case for her extradition, and we also support it," Senior BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed said.

"We always press for her extradition according to the law. This is between the foreign ministries of the two countries. We also asked the government of India to please send her back to face trial in Bangladesh," he added.
Ahmed emphasised that Bangladesh seeks normal relations with all neighbours, including India, but only on equal terms. "We need a friendly relationship based on mutual respect, equality with all the countries, including India," he said.
His comments came soon after the BNP's sweeping victory in the general elections held on Thursday.
This is the first election since the mass uprising in August 2024 that forced Hasina to flee to India.
Hasina, who has been living in exile in New Delhi since her ouster, was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal in November 2025 for crimes against humanity linked to the violent suppression of the 2024 uprising.
Ahmed dismissed criticisms about the election's inclusivity after the Awami League was barred due to its suspension and ongoing violence probes.
"People of the country know that this is a very inclusive election. If you like to mention the exclusion of Awami League etc, people have rejected it through the mass uprising in Aug 2024," Ahmed underlined.
The Awami League's exclusion stemmed from a decision by the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which banned the party's activities in 2025 amid probes into its conduct during the uprising.
"They are being prosecuted, and also the investigation is going on against the political party Awami League. This is under the process," Ahmed added.

India's mindset must change; Awami League era over in Bangladesh: Tarique aide

Source: PTI
February 15, 2026 13:35 IST
Following the BNP's election victory, Bangladesh is seeking to reset its relationship with India, emphasizing mutual benefit and a recognition of the changed political landscape
14tarique-rahman4.jpg

Key Points

  • Bangladesh seeks to reset ties with India following the BNP's election victory, emphasising mutual benefit and a recognition of the changed political landscape.
  • BNP leader Humayun Kabir urges India to acknowledge the new political reality in Bangladesh and ensure its territory isn't used to undermine Bangladesh's sovereignty.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to visit India, signaling potential for future engagement.
  • The new Bangladesh government aims to pursue balanced relations with India, China, and the US, prioritizing national interests and regional stability.
  • Bangladesh dismisses concerns about communal violence and calls for stronger regional cooperation on counter-terrorism, including intelligence sharing.
Bangladesh wants to reset ties with India on a fresh footing now that ousted premier Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party no longer hold power, Humayun Kabir, adviser to BNP chairman Tarique Rahman, has said, asserting that the two nations should work together for "mutual benefit."
Rahman's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday secured a sweeping victory with more than a two-thirds majority in the landmark parliamentary elections held on Thursday.

In an interview with PTI Videos on Saturday, Kabir stressed that the onus lies on India to recognise the changed political reality in Bangladesh after the BNP's resounding electoral mandate.
"The change has to come from the mindset in India. Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League don't exist in today's Bangladesh anymore. The people have given a clear verdict in favour of BNP," Kabir said.
Kabir described Hasina, who fled to India after 2024's August uprising, as a "terrorist" responsible for the deaths of over 1,500 people.
Kabir urged the Indian government to ensure that its territory is not used by Hasina or other Awami League figures in ways that could affect stability in Bangladesh.
"India must not be seen as complicit in any activities that undermine Bangladesh's sovereignty. Once that is addressed, normal diplomatic cooperation can resume. We are neighbours and should work together for mutual benefit," he added.
India, on November 26, 2025, said it is examining a request by Bangladesh's interim government to extradite Hasina and asserted that it is committed to ensuring the best interests of the people of that country.
"We remain committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion, and stability in that country, and will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
Kabir highlighted the recent cordial phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahman, where Modi extended an invitation for Rahman to visit India at a convenient time.
On the timing of such a visit, Kabir said domestic priorities come first.
"Tarique Rahman will focus on setting the country on a path of prosperity and economic security. Once things stabilise here, he will take up international engagements, including the visit to India."
On Bangladesh's approach to the growing competition among India, China, and the US in South Asia, Kabir said the new government will pursue balanced relations.
"We will negotiate from a position of strength with a strong mandate from the people. National interest and the well-being of our territory will remain at the centre of our foreign policy," he said.
"What we want is balanced relations. We're not going to have relations with one country specifically, and we're not going to have any disclosures on any agreements," he added.
On minority safety, particularly Hindus, Kabir dismissed concerns of communal violence in Bangladesh.
"Even during the five days without a government after the August uprising, an unprecedented situation, no one attacked minorities. That shows communal harmony here. The problem doesn't exist in the way it's sometimes projected."
India has been expressing concerns over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh.
The community has faced a series of attacks, some fatal, after the killing of radical youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi in December.
Kabir also called for stronger regional cooperation on counter-terrorism, including in intelligence sharing.
"Isolation hinders progress. Elected governments must exchange information and work together to track extremists and terrorists and build confidence."
Kabir reiterated that a BNP-led government would prioritize peace, prosperity, and integrated economic and security cooperation in the region and beyond, positioning Bangladesh as a strategic conduit for broader ties.
Bangladesh has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other regional leaders to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the country's next prime minister, Tarique Rahman, on February 17, according to a BNP statement on Saturday.
