Witness alleges getting threats for being outspoken in 1984
New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) A woman witness, whose father was killed in 1984 anti-Sikh riots, today alleged before a Delhi court, which is trying Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and others, that she and her mother had received threats for being outspoken about the incident.
Nirpreet Kaur, 42, also alleged before Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta that the police officials did not record her or her mother''s statement after the killing of her father Nirmal Singh in the riots that followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.
"I had narrated the incident to the police officials who came to the Air Force Gurdwara (where she and her mother had taken shelter). However, they did not write anything. My mother also narrated everything to the police officials but even her version was not recorded by them," she said during her cross examination.
To a question what steps she had taken to ensure that culprits who were responsible for her father''s death were booked, she claimed she and her mother started receiving threats for being vocal.
"I and my mother had started receiving threats on account of my being outspoken/vocal about the incident and due to apprehension of danger to our life, my mother had taken me to Punjab. Even when I used to come to Delhi at that time, suspicious elements used to roam around my house and police officials used to harass us," Kaur said.
The woman witness, who remained in jails for several years after being booked in three different TADA cases --two in Delhi and one in Punjab,-- was also grilled with regard to her joining of the then banned outift All India Sikh Student Federation.
In her statement earlier, Kaur had said she was involved in two "false" cases of TADA, remained in jail for many years.
In one case, she was acquitted while in another case, she was discharged. In Punjab also, she claimed she was implicated in a case pertaining to TADA and later discharged, the witness had said.
The witness said she joined All India Sikh Students Federation as its aim was to help Sikhs and denied knowing the demands of this organisation.
The cross examination of the witness remained inconclusive and is likely to continue tomorrow.
