I saw some punjabi movies in recent times and wondering what kind of movies should actauly be made on sikhs ?

1. Harbhajan Maan style :

Pros :
Atleast people started watching cultural movies having villages etc.
Some say he show truth about sikhs abroad and love for punjab

Cons :
Clean shaven hero + pure punjabi speaking + hot girls + Scenic Abroad views : who will not want this ?? so punjabi youth follows

2. Sing is king style :

Pros :
High budget + Big frame + Large audience + Bollywood with Turban
Hot songs : Projecting sardars as kings ( In some scenes atleast )

Cons :

Most of the scenes are showing sardars as pretty funny and speaking stupiditly

3. Religious Movies :

Showing our guru's and they sacrifices

Pros :
No doubt it shows people like me where we cam from ?
Catalyst for feelings and respect towards sikhism

Cons :
Not that big audince

4. Topics like 84 Riots :

Pros :
Refresh memories of people of what happened.

Cons :
Again not big audience
Sensor board dont want complete thing to be shown.

So wondering what kind of movies should be made on sikhs ? Or should movies be made on sikhs ?

Movies on day to day problems that affect morality and virtuous way of life. No need to stress on Sikhism but on characters that come from this faith, who are more settled in wide culture and see how the society can be served better way. When a person rises above the crowd, what inspired him/her to become that one, it becomes talk of the town. Sikhi is not limited only to all facets you have explained above. Today, may be we don't need a hero, may be a class as hero.

I like pk70's idea.

Also we could have epic style movies on Sikh history. There are lots of traditions that would be well suited to movies ala 300/Braveheart style. These should be made Hollywood style and not Bollywood style which would totally ruin the vibe by having characters burst into songs.

The films should honestly depict things like Banda Singh's rebellion, the Anglo-Sikh wars, Maharajah Ranjit Singh. The movies could be vehicles to explore important Sikh themes like bravery, the development of the panth, the politics of the time. These would serve as tools to impart historical knowledge to Sikhs and nonSikhs.

We have a long way to go for this. My own experience of Panjabi movies is not promising. The many films made in the 80s were terribly cheap and poorly made, hinging on casteism to a large degree. What we need is a visionary who can present Sikh themes in a modern idiom that allow all who watch to relate. Movies about ancient Spartans and the Scottish rebellion can smash the box offices, as well as films with no English dialogue (i.e. Apocylipto amd the other Mel Gibson film about Jesus)

Getting returns on the large investemnt required to do this justice as well as marketing and appealing to a wider SIkh audience is the crux of the matter here.

Rajwinder ji,

You have divided the movies into different categories similarly the viewers too have to be categoriesed.

Professional film maker has to choose & keep in mind the target (market segment or viewers) in order to break even and make a profit.

Making a documentary, art, regional and amateur film is completely different from main stream cinema.

For example "Kambdi kalai" was a good movie. Check out the link below

300!!!

Come on. Guys fighting drunk war elephants single handedly. 30 men facing an Afghan horde of 30 thousand in Amritsar. Managing to lop of the head of a stubborn enemy who has taken over and defiled you holiest shrine - and escape!

Dude, Sikh films are just begging to be made. One day soon.

That is the story of Sukha Singh and Mehtab Singh. A guy called Massa Ranghar had taken over Harmandir Sahib at the behest of the Moghuls. After killing all of the defenders he defiled it by turning it into his personal office. He apparenty used it to hold seedy nautch parties and smoke his hukka pipe. Probably to demoralise the Khalsa.

Those two Singhs heard and apparently volunteered for a suicide assassination mission. They disguised themselves as tax collectors and carrying two sacks of rocks (to simulate the tax revenue they had collected) made their way to Harmandir Sahib.

After they got in the complex, Sukha Singh grabbed Massa Rangher's body guard as Massa was looking into one of the sacks. Mehtab Singh chopped his head off at that point. They both escaped with his head by jumping into the sarowar and swimming across despite the guards.

Interestingly the grandson of Mehtab Singh wrote what I believe to be the first Sikh history book called Panth Prakash. His name was Rattan Bhangu.

Yes, I've got the 300 graphic novel. It is so cool. Not my favorite though.

Are you up for a graphic novel? You certainly have the art skills for it. Could you complete a whole story? I'm up for it but I can't draw. Could help with the story and background maybe. It will have to be dark and gritty though.....lol

I was reading through that piece of history and could imagine Sukha and Mehtab enter the complex, etc etc. Sukha taking out the guard while Mehtab finishing the job... This is definitely gona be number 1 on my to-do list. You won't see it anytime soon though, I've got my hands full.

Oh man! I've been talking to people about doing comics for soooo long!
I don't have any experience with comics. You wouldn't have to draw it, Just come up with the script. :advocate: Maybe ask around for others who are willing to help.
dark and gritty? definitely!
We could either do one on history or make up a story altogether. I've got a few ideas if we go with the latter. If we go with the history, we'll make sure we get it right!
Now Im really excited!

Ok, I think we should go with the Sukha and Mehtab story. I have a few ideas myself. Rattan Bhangu went into Sukha Singh's childhood in his work. It is really interesting. We could add elements of that as flashbacks in the story.

This could be the coolest thing ever!

Don't do the assassination scene in Harmandir Sahib. It would give away a key climax of the story. Make em wait for it.

Keep in touch via PM.

Well i think when there is so much publicity against sikhism then why should not we do publicity in favour of sikhism . Movies are i think pretty good means of spreading the word. other wise most of our history will be gone un told . I think we are playing more defensive then offensive.. well that doesnt mean any kind of war but if few of us just read whta our guru wrote and get satisfied by thinking that it was great and people will come to us to and ask all our great history then we will be lying to our self. WE should go out and do as much marketing or publicity of this religion as we can. I have read very few chapters in sikh history but i think that is what guru did... Visited so many places , give birth to so many new places i think that is marketing or no ?

Rajwinder ji,

As Bhagat Singh ji and Dalkhalsa ji are discussing on comic field to promote Sikhi, there is another medium, very impressive one," animation " if made with intelligent themes, it could serve the puopose too. What do you think?

current team members and current positions:
writers: dalsingh, amarsanghera
researchers: dalsingh,
artists: bhagatsingh,
philosophical and nonsensical touches: sinister :{;o:(kidding)

I think we should get to work as soon as possible, we need to start discussing:
characters, settings, storyline, historical/eyewitness accounts, dialogues etc
and how we gona present these:
layout of panels, speech bubbles, mood (dark, gritty, etc), etc

what do u guys think about having conversations in msn messenger or somethng similar? so we can all join in one conversation. this is serious business, u know

Oh yeah .. WEll Animation always get a distinct kind of welcome in case of movies. Like Shrek , Ice age , hanuman etc .. and other good thing is as kids like animation so may be if we target new generation then certainly they will grow up well :)

Dalsingh and amarsanghera writing a graphic comic? :rofl!!:…the guy has objections to watching a little blood in pictures (hows he gonna handle a blood soaked superhero?)
In all likelihood he probably calls garbage men…sanitation engineers (you really want these guys to write dialogue?)

something Dark and Gritty? L.o.L you cuddly rabbits are definitely gonna need my help

First, you always start off with character development…then the plot (unless you want to make it on some historical character…which, according to my opinion is boring and unoriginal to start with)

You usually design the plot/settings around the character…not the other way around

Every GOOD comic-book character must possess
- A Perversion
- A Bad habit
- A Weakness
- A Fear
- A Strength
- A Lie
- A Motivational/Aspirational event
- Witt
- And a serious bad-*** attitude…not just a look (or else you end up with something like "the adventures of Tintin")

You guys couldn’t write a decent porno plot, let alone a graphic comic, without me.:{;o:
