Water4Ha

Khalsa Aid has launched the 3rd phase of its Haiti earthquake relief program; this involves providing long term water solutions for the survivors of the earthquake in the epicentre area of Leoganne. This new project, Water4Haiti, which was launched by Khalsa Aid on 3rd May 2010 involves installing water pumps and water wells in orphanages around Leoganne. The providing of water has been identified as an urgent need, and is an expansion of existing Khalsa Aid work in Haitian orphanages.

Brief outline of Khalsa Aid work in Haiti since January 2010

  • Installing water tanks in refugee camps (over 500,000 litres of water provided)
  • Sourcing and delivering crutches for amputees in medical clinics through Medicines Sans Frontiers.
  • Containers of food (20 tonnes) , medicines and other urgent provisions.
  • Establishing and maintaining Guru Nanak Clinic.
  • Establishing and maintaining Camp Unity, allowing for several NGOS from around the world to treat the 200000 people of Leoganne.

New Vision Orphanage, Leoganne:
New Vision Orphanage is situated in Leogane, Haiti and is a home to 37 children. This area is the epicentre of the earthquake which occurred on 12th Jan 2010.

Khalsa Aid has been providing food, charcoal and clothes to this orphanage since January 2010 and now the next phase of water and sanitation includes providing its own source of water (by creating a water well in this instance) for the orphanage. The merciless hot weather is affecting the health of the children who need to keep clean and wash regularly. Some of the children have developed various skin rashes and other conditions due to the limited amount of water available for washing. The manager of the orphanage Mr Gessner " I would like to thank Khalsa Aid for their continued support for our children, we are very grateful for the water-well. This water-well will be a godsend for these children. Thank you so much"

There are many orphanages in Haiti which do not have sufficient access to water. Khalsa Aid is planning to expand this program to other orphanages, so that the Haitian children have access to the most basic necessity in life, water. We rely on the generosity of the public to carry out such project.

This particular well was paid for by Bhai Iqbal Singh of Stafford Road, Birmingham, UK who wanted to make a real difference to the lives of the children, Khalsa Aid is grateful to Bhai Iqbal Singh and his family. If you wish to sponsor a water pump or water-well then please contact Khalsa Aid.

We are now registered with JustGiving (http://www. justgiving. com/khalsaaid) , which provides a quick and safe way to donate online, either by a one off donation or by setting up a monthly donation. Monthly donations, however small, are encouraged as it is the most practical and useful method of donation; helping us to plan projects in advance and be more efficient.

JustGiving is preferable to Paypal as it does not charges a fee on each donation, and also as it enables Khalsa Aid to reclaim up to 28% on each donation (Gift Aid).

Khalsa Aid is dependent on the generosity of the Sangat to carry out such vital Seva, to donate please click on the following link
