Amritsar, April 9: Ending the confusion over the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur falling on the same day, November 24, as per the Nanakshahi Calender, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti today declared a new date to observe the martyrdom day of the ninth Guru. Jathedar Vedanti convened a meeting of the Sikh clergy and rejected the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) resolution passed in the budget session on March 30, which stated that Guru Teg Bahadur’s martyrdom day would be observed on December 15.
“The jathedars have deliberated over the issue. The martyrdom day would now be observed on December 10 and not December 15, as decided by the SGPC. All Sikh population should note it down,” said Jathedar Vedanti after the meeting. He added that they finalised the dates after consulting experts and the 11-member committee specially constituted to make

“There was confusion among the Sikh masses, which is now over,” said former SGPC secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta. SGPC member and former SGPC general secretary Bibi Kiranjot Kaur said the whole Panth had been looking at Akal Takht for clearing the confusion.
SGPC chief Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar had faced criticism for declaring his own date for the martyrdom day without consulting the Sikh clergy. The Sikh intellectuals said he should have left the matter to be decided by the Akal Takht and not poked his nose into the controversial matter. “That is why I boycotted the SGPC meeting, which decided the new dates,” said Calcutta. Vedanti, when asked about the clashing dates, said the dates of these two significant occasions are calculated according to the dates on which Diwali falls and because Diwali and Hola Mohala continue to be followed as per the lunar calender, the two dates clashed this year.
Jathedar Makkar was not available for comments, but sources close to him said the decision of jathedars would prevail, as had been the tradition in the past `
