INDIA: A group of young Singaporeans undertook a charitable journey to India recently. Some 20 students were in India's northern state of Punjab to rebuild a school and teach computer skills to rural children.
The Government High School in the tiny village of Gurdaspur in Punjab is very different from modern schools. It does not have chairs and desks, and its students have an open-air classroom.
It is the only learning centre for children, who have to walk miles to reach the school. This and other aspects of rural living were an eye-opener for the 20 young Singaporean students who were in the village for community service.
Satwant Singh, vice president of Young Sikh Association (Singapore), said: "We have everything - you flick a switch, you get light; you turn on the tap, you get water; yet at the end of the day, there are some people who feel that they need more, more should be done for them.
"What we need to do is expose them to this kind of environment and to tell them that you should be grateful for what you have."
