Baba Dyaal Singh Nirankari…… the Baba that walked in the Footsteps of Guru Nanak Ji…

Baba Dyaal Singh was born in 1783…the decades of darkness following the fall of the mughal Empire were slowly entering a period of light…the Glow of Freedom was shining in Punjab….the Khalsa Raaj of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was in the Womb of Time..growing day by day and ready to burst on to the world…
In this Age of Darkness….the true followers of the revolutionary Path of Gurmatt begun by Guru nanak ji were few and far between..it is a tragedy of sorts that even in the heyday of the Khalsa Raaj…it was to be these same forces of Brahminism that were to rule supreme..the Maharja was known to be everything.. from philanthropist extraordinary. to .soldier par excellence.. Kind..fair and just ruler.. dealt with all religions….and creeds fairly and equally.. A fantastic administrator…..but a true follower of Gurmatt he was not. Yes He did build Mosques..he gilded Hindu mandirs with Gold..and he also covered the Harmandar sahib in Gold and Jewels..and he didn’t execute a single person throughout his decades of rule…he did nothing to advance the Gurmatt way of life..Yes..many thousands of his subjects converted to Sikhism during his rule….to be at an advantage to join his Khalsa Army..his administration….but during his time…the control of all Gurdwaras and Takhats remained in Brahminical Mahants…Brahminical practices which were clearly anti-gurmatt and anti-gurbani continued in full swing without hindrance from any quarter. SIKHS had gained the Throne of Punjab..but neither Sikhism nor Punjabi/Gurmukhi were accorded any status…"Royal or otherwise".... The Wily Brahmin continued to have full sway in the Royal Corridors of Power in Lahore….and also the Royals of Patiala..Nabha..Kapurthala….Jind..etc etc….None were spared such indluence in all matters social and religious…
It was in such circumstances that Dyaal Singh was born. From a young age he used to visit Baba joga Singh Gurdawra in the Peshawar Region. And it didn’t take him long to realsie that what was “read” daily in the Gurdawra was not what was “practiced”…in other words the Gurbani was just being read for the sake of reading it. The young lad decided that…was NOT the way it was going to be for him…He was going to practice Gurbani..the way Guru nanak ji intended it to be. From that day on Dyaal Singh began to Live Gurbani….while he was deep into studying Gurbani his mother passed away and he moved his residence to Rawalpindi.
In Rawalpindi dyaal singh began to operate a small grocery shop. He would go to the town of Bhora to buy goods in bulk. There he would be sure to visit the dera of Sant budhu Shah. There he would engage in Gurbani discourses . A charan Dass kapoor who was a regular there was so impressed with the deep knowledge and stunning good looks of the young Dyaal Singh..that he offered the hand of his daughter in marriage to him. Soon the first opportunity to bring Gurbani into practice arose. Charan Dass didn’t want to arrange the marriage in the Month of CHET because it was an ashubh – unlucky month !! With the compete agreement of Sant Budhu Shaha Ji..Dyaal Singh managed to convince Charan Dass ji that such thoughts and practices were anti-Gurmatt. The Marriage took place in Chet..First victory for Dyaal Singh. Secondly Dyaal Ji insisted that his marriage would be in the Dharamshala…with accompanying KIRTAN only..No fire etc and no other shuguns..offerings..and certainly no daaj vikhava etc. That’s the way it was for the 25 year old handsome groom Dyaal Singh….This marriage can be aptly described as the very First Anand Karaj..and aptly demonstrates the Forward looking visionary that Dyaal Singh was.
Dyaal Singh had two slogans….Dhan Nirankaar Dhana nirankaar..whoever follows the DEHDHAREES is Khwaar..LOST and Headless. His Second slogan was Sach Bolo Poora tolo….Speak the TRUTH and NEVER short-weigh !! For these revolutionary slogans..Dyaal Singh was ostracized from BOTH Hindu and Sikh Society…..acceptable from the Hindu point of view..BUT quite telling about the Sikh Society of the time !! Dyaal Singh was BANNED from even drawing water from the wells..he was an outcast !!
But Baba dyaal Singh ji stuck to his Guiding Principles…kept on doing Naam jappo….KIRT KARO…HONEST LABOUR..and Waand Chhako as Gurbani declares…till the day he died…on 18 December 1855. His dead body was assigned to the flowing waters amindst kiratn of Mool mantar and shabds and langgar of Karrah parshaad. No Hindu rites were performed at all and utterly rejected at all levels.
In 1855, Dyaal Singh’s follower Baba DARBARA SINGH NIRANKARI decided to add the FOUR LAVAANs into the Anand Karaj Ceremony of Sikhs. This Anand Karaj was First performed on 14th CHET sangrand of 1855 at Rawalpindi. Baba Darbara Singh Nirankari also issued the First Codified “Rehat maryada” Document that contained all Social and Religious ceremonies etc to be performed by SIKHS from Birth to Death. This was called Hukmnama from Sri Akal Purakh and issued in 1856. Importance of GURMUKHI in Education of a SIKH was again stressed…. For only the Second time since the advent of Guru Nanak Ji/Guru Angad Ji…

It is not an exaggeration to call the NIRANKARI LEHR.. the FIRST WAKE UP CALL to the Sikh nation…a Precursor to the NAMDHAREE LEHR..and THE SINGH SABHA LEHR that was soon to follow.

Its a sad commentary of our times..that the very same situation has come to pass in SIKHISM today.... the very same Karam Kaands,,the Empty Rituals and useless parrotting/endless repetitions of paaths, various types of paaths.akhand and sehaj..sampat and smapat..short ones long ones and longer ones..mantars and jantars.. and entertainment/income generation thru gurbani shabads are holding sway...Gurbani is being read for the sake of reading it..not practising its ideals.
The GURUS were Honest hard working KIRTEES....Honest LABOURERS..earning a LIVING from Hands..not selling Gurbani paaths or kirtan..and LIVING what they Preached....walking the Talking....unlike the preachers od today... we need more Dyaal Singhs and Darbara Singhs of the Nirankari type to WAKE US UP.

We have to find a way to get all these great articles into one thread so we have a collection of reliable and informative lessons in one place. After a week these disappear and you can't find them without time-consuming searches, which are futile if you can't remember the title of the thread. Keep the articles where they are -- but then also copy them into a kind of journal where they are all together.

AAD0002 JI,
GURFATEH.

a most sensible suggestion....perhaps Aman Ji and the others can sit together to put it into practise. With our numbers soon to increase towards 125,000..or even more..things will get even "messier" ?? I hope not.
Already i face the same problem you have highlighted...the search is time consuming and sometimes one never gets what is really wanted..so frustrating... Its no exaggeration that SPN is now a virtual WAREHOUSE of invaluable knowledge on Gurmatt/Sikh history/Gurbani etc etc. IF we make it easier to find...more will find !! ( no pun intended)

Gyani ji

I like your comparison so a virtual WAHREHOUSE of invaluable knowledge. It would take some time to read through everything and sort things out. It would not be difficult, but just time-consuming. In the end the result would be worth the time spent. So good writings would not get lost in cyber-space.

The other day I was in Amritsar and was wondering whether sikhs have ever interefered or compete Hindusism. In addition has anyone played mischief to copy Mecca or Kaqa and that too in same city. In similar way did Muslim competed or copied Vaticam or Jerusalem, then why not only Durgiana Mandir has been established in the same vicinity but at many instance more importance is attempted to be given to
this temple than Darbar Sahib whenever any Foreign dignatires visits this city.

Yes Jio..there is a concerted effort to absorb sikhism back into the majority religion. This effort began with the assasination attempt on Guru nanak ji when the wall collapsed and has continued with renewed vigour throughout the centuries....players change..tactics change..but the ultimate objective remains.. Durgiana Mandir is a poorly disguised attempt at usurping the importance of Harmandir sahib..and it remains a poor attempt..of all the foreign dignatories that are gently "persuaded" to pay a visit..ONLY the QUEEN ELIZABETH of England REFUSED....She came to visit Harmandar sahib ONLY and thats what she did. On my last visit there the place looked forlorn...deserted almost.......and nothing compared to the vibrant pulsating Darbar of Guru Ramdass Ji...with almost 70,000 visitors daily

Absolutely right Gyani ji ...I had a visit too in November ...It is a clear Arya Samaji design it seems....I could only ridicule ..why this competition ??? What are they trying to prove ?

Bhul Chuk Muaaf Karni but I had no regards for that temple which clearly showed a jelousy factor. If they truely regard Khalsa as the sword arm of the Nation they should not have allowed this ...
