NEW DELHI: Unless all those who burn their wives are hanged, the barbaric crime would not stop, the Supreme Court has said.

"This (bride burning) is barbaric and wild animal like behaviour and only when the perpetrators of such a crime are sent to the gallows the people will realise that bride burning is a crime," said that apex court bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice T.S. Thakur said.

The court said this while dismissing Monday a petition by one Milap Kumar challenging his conviction and award of life imprisonment by the trial court in Ferozepur district of Punjab.

Justice Katju said that "many of my brother judges were ahinsavadi (supporters of non-violence) but I am not". I believe that the perpetrators of such a heinous crime should be handed down an exemplary punishment, Justice Katju said.

In the instant case, Milap Kumar burnt Raj Bala for refusing to join him in work in the agriculture field. The incident took place May 10, 1995 in Fazilka city.

The prosecution said that Milap Kumar burnt his wife after pouring kerosene oil on her and bolted the door from outside.

Raj Bala, a mother of two, received 80 percent burn injuries. She died May 14, 1995.

Milap Kumar was awarded life imprisonment Nov 9, 1999 by the trial court. His plea challenging the verdict was dismissed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court Jan 6, 2009.

This barbaric social evil still looms over a large part of India particularly in Haryana, Rajasthan, UP. Stringent legal measures are required to end this evil. Probably capital punishment can deter evil minded people but application of capital punishment in the Indian legal system is questionable where the loop holes can convict an innocent and can let a dreaded criminal off the hook.

It is barbaric and should not be tolerated.
The broad issue is EDUCATION. I agree with the comment that the justice system is flawed - unfortunately that is the case anywhere in the world hence it is safer to avoid death sentence. That has the benefit of providing a lifeline for an honest person who can be convicted of a crime - it is more humane.
General and religious enlightenment has to come by examples and deeds. Along with highlighting the plight of sufferers of this heinous crime let us double up visibity of the people who do good I have already mentioned Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal elsewhere - please let us find more of these saints and give them an airing- I am sure thousands of people are looking for these practical examples that are in their midst but certain news overshadow this. The government needs a shake up because people we have there are limited by greed and lack of education themselves and incapable to help or reach ordinary people who are the ones that matter.
Let us also highlight the government/leaders who give wrong signals to people and remove them from office and allow 'Seechawals' the chance to show them how it can be done.
