Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਪੇਖੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ
Ur ḏẖārai jo anṯar nām. Sarab mai pekẖai bẖagvān.
One who keeps self heart always aware of the creator. Sees the creator embedded in all.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਅਪਰਸੁ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ੧॥
Nimakẖ nimakẖ ṯẖākur namaskārai. Nānak oh apras sagal nisṯārai. ||1||
One thankful to the creator with every blinking moment. Such beyond reproach helps all to salvation.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਆਤਮ ਹਿਤਾਵੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੋਊ ਕਹਾਵੈ
Parabẖ kī āgi▫ā āṯam hiṯāvai. Jīvan mukaṯ so▫ū kahāvai.
Following the direction of the creator with love. Such is the liberated life.

ਤੈਸਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਤਹ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਓਗੁ
Ŧaisā harakẖ ṯaisā us sog. Saḏā anand ṯah nahī bi▫og.
Happiness and sorrow are alike. Such is always in bliss and never separated.

ਤੈਸਾ ਸੁਵਰਨੁ ਤੈਸੀ ਉਸੁ ਮਾਟੀ ਤੈਸਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤੈਸੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਟੀ
Ŧaisā suvran ṯaisī us mātī. Ŧaisā amriṯ ṯaisī bikẖ kẖātī.
Such sees gold and dirt as the same. Sweet or bitter are same to such.

ਤੈਸਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਰੰਕੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਰਾਜਾਨੁ
Ŧaisā mān ṯaisā abẖimān. Ŧaisā rank ṯaisā rājān.
Honor or dishonor are the same. Poverty or kingdom are the same to such.

ਜੋ ਵਰਤਾਏ ਸਾਈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ੭॥
Jo varṯā▫e sā▫ī jugaṯ. Nānak oh purakẖ kahī▫ai jīvan mukaṯ. ||7||
Accepts as it as so served on a path. Nanak such person is liberated from life.
ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji define who to be beyond reproach. Constantly aware of the creator, sees creator embedded in all, thankful to the creator in every living moment, such is the guide to salvation.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 9, 7th stanza define the mindset of the liberated. Recognizing creator’s wishes and be so liberated, always in bliss dis-regarding happiness and sorrow, gold and dirt or sweet and bitter are same, honor and lack thereof or kingdom and poverty the same. A higher state of living indeed.


Guru ji conclude that living in consonance of as it happens, such can be called liberated from life.

the living death does not sound as bad as I used to think, I always thought it was a complete death, but it is more of a liberating death, you are not dead, you just see things differently, you see things as per Hukam, beautiful
