Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)


ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਪੇਖੈ ਏਕਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
Man sācẖā mukẖ sācẖā so▫e. Avar na pekẖai ekas bin ko▫e.
One whose mind is pure, only can such can utter pure. None is seen other than one creator.
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਲਛਣ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
Nānak ih lacẖẖaṇ barahm gi▫ānī ho▫e. ||1||
Nanak, these are the attributes of such most learned

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥

Eight stanzas hymn

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਕ ਊਪਰਿ ਆਸ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī ek ūpar ās. Barahm gi▫ānī kā nahī binās.
Most learned has expectations in only one. Most learned is never destroyed.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਸਮਾਹਾ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਉਮਾਹਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai garībī samāhā. Barahm gi▫ānī par▫upkār omāhā.
Most learned has humility in mind. Most learned is excited to selflessly help others.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਲੇ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਬੰਧਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai nāhī ḏẖanḏẖā. Barahm gi▫ānī le ḏẖāvaṯ banḏẖā.
Most learned is not engrossed in chores. Most learned controls and tethers the mind.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਭਲਾ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੁਫਲ ਫਲਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai ho▫e so bẖalā. Barahm gi▫ānī sufal falā.
Most learned lives in accepting consonance. Most learned ripens like a fruit.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਪੈ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
Barahm gi▫ānī sang sagal uḏẖār. Nānak barahm gi▫ānī japai sagal sansār. ||4||
In company of most learned, all are salvaged. Nanak, all world develops understanding through most learned.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji talk about the esteemed wise. One with pure mind, pure speech and recognizing of but one creator.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 8, 4th stanza/hymn, describe additional qualities of the esteemed learned. Expects only of one creator, ever lasting presence, humility and selflessly helpful, mind does not wander or engrossed in menial tasks, accepting of what happens, flourishes and matures like a fruit.

Guru ji conclude that company of esteemed learned is way to salvation and understanding for the world.
