Salok

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਰੁ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥੧॥
Kām kroḏẖ ar lobẖ moh binas jā▫e ahaʼnmev. Nānak parabẖ sarṇāgaṯī kar parsāḏ gurḏev. ||1||
Lust, anger, greed, attachment and egotism may banish. O lord creator, Nanak has humbly come to your presence seeking such benevolence.




ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥

Eight stanzas hymn


ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ॥
Jih parsāḏ ṯūʼn pargat sansār. Ŧis parabẖ ka▫o mūl na manhu bisār.
Through whose benevolence you got fame in the world. Never forget such creator in your mind.


ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੂੜ ਤੂ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਜਾਪੁ ॥
Jih parsāḏ ṯerā parṯāp. Re man mūṛ ṯū ṯā ka▫o jāp.
Through whose benevolence you became prestigious. You foolish mind, remember such.


ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਪੂਰੇ ॥ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਜਾਨੁ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥
Jih parsāḏ ṯere kāraj pūre. Ŧisėh jān man saḏā hajūre.
Through whose benevolence your deeds complete. Mind, take such to be with always.


ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤੂੰ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੁ ॥ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਚੁ ॥
Jih parsāḏ ṯūʼn pāvahi sācẖ. Re man mere ṯūʼn ṯā si▫o rācẖ.
Through whose benevolence get the truth. O my mind, stay entwined with such.


ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਭ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਪੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥
Jih parsāḏ sabẖ kī gaṯ ho▫e. Nānak jāp japai jap so▫e. ||7||
Through whose benevolence all find salvation. Nanak, cherishes such and only such be so cherished.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state the five mental attributes that affect living. These being lust, anger, greed, attachment and egotism. Guru ji pray to be blessed so these are banished.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 6, 7th stanza cite quality and efficacy of living. Such as becoming famous, prestigious, able to deliver results and be finding the truth.

Guru ji specifically address the mind to never forget such a benevolent creator, to always remember, be always aware and recognize being in company. Doing so as ever cherishing.
