ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਇਆ ਪਰਿਆ ਤਉ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਅਪਨੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
Firaṯ firaṯ parabẖ ā▫i▫ā pari▫ā ṯa▫o sarnā▫e. Nānak kī parabẖ benṯī apnī bẖagṯī lā▫e. ||1||
Creator, (I) came from wandering and wandering, at your shelter so arrived. Nanak prays, to the creator, attach to contemplation of yourself.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਜਾਚਕ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
Jācẖak jan jācẖai parabẖ ḏān. Kar kirpā ḏevhu har nām.
Beggar one seeks alms of the creator. Do bless, give creator’s understanding.

ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਗਉ ਧੂਰਿ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰਿ ॥
Sāḏẖ janā kī māga▫o ḏẖūr. Pārbarahm merī sarḏẖā pūr.
Seeking dust from the feet of the pious. Supreme creator fulfill my wish.

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਉ ॥ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਧਿਆਵਉ ॥
Saḏā saḏā parabẖ ke gun gāva▫o. Sās sās parabẖ ṯumėh ḏẖi▫āva▫o.
Always but always sing the virtues of the creator. Breath and each breath contemplate upon you, the creator.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤਿ ॥
Cẖaran kamal si▫o lāgai parīṯ. Bẖagaṯ kara▫o parabẖ kī niṯ nīṯ.
In love with the supple feet. Each and everyday do contemplation of the creator.

ਏਕ ਓਟ ਏਕੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
Ėk ot eko āḏẖār. Nānak māgai nām parabẖ sār. ||1||
One shelter and only one support. Nanak seeks full understanding of the creator.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that wandering all over I come under creator’s cover. There is just one request that the creator may link me to contemplation of the creator.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 20, 1st sabad most humbly and likening to a beggar seek alms of creator’s understanding. The humble and lowly association with the pious helps fulfill such a wish. Always and with every breath be aware of virtues of the creator. Always be receptive in the heart of the gentle presence of the creator and everyday contemplate upon the creator.

Guru ji conclude there is only the creator of fundamental support and so wishing to understand all about the creator.
