ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
Sāth na cẖālai bin bẖajan bikẖi▫ā saglī cẖẖār. Har har nām kamāvanā Nānak ih ḏẖan sār. ||1||
Nothing goes with one except contemplation, all wealth turns to ashes. Creator, creator’s understanding is the only wealth worthy of making.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਮੈਲੁ ॥ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਫੈਲੁ ॥
Gun gāvaṯ ṯerī uṯras mail. Binas jā▫e ha▫umai bikẖ fail.
Singing your virtues, dirt is removed. Spreading poison of ego is eliminated.

ਹੋਹਿ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਬਸੈ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ ਸਾਸਿ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
Hohi acẖinṯ basai sukẖ nāl. Sās garās har nām samāl.
Becoming so carefree live in comfort. Breath and bite remember creator’s understanding.

ਛਾਡਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਗਲੀ ਮਨਾ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਨਾ ॥
Cẖẖād si▫ānap saglī manā. Sāḏẖsang pāvahi sacẖ ḏẖanā.
Discard all cleverness, oh mind. In company of the pious, find true wealth.

ਹਰਿ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸੰਚਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ॥ ਈਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
Har pūnjī sancẖ karahu bi▫uhār. Īhā sukẖ ḏargėh jaikār.
Accumulate creator’s understanding as wealth and deal in so. Such is comfort, the welcoming call at the final abode.

ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਦੇਖੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ॥੭॥
Sarab niranṯar eko ḏekẖ. Kaho Nānak jā kai masṯak lekẖ. ||7||
See the one indestructible in all. Nanak says, such as written on the forehead of the fortunate.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that all becomes ashes and the only effort that sustains is contemplation of the creator. Also only wealth worth making is creator’s understanding.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 19, 7th sabad state that one creator’s virtues and understanding are the real tangibles. So focused mind is cleansed, ego neutralized, true wealth of understanding comes about, the cleverness is replaced by the company of the pious and the benefits thereof. Such is the true wealth of life.

Guru ji conclude that it is the fortunate so blessed who see one indestructible.
