ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਿਖੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥
Saṯ purakẖ jin jāni▫ā saṯgur ṯis kā nā▫o. Ŧis kai sang sikẖ uḏẖrai Nānak har gun gā▫o. ||1||
Such who recognized the eternal omni-present one, name of such is the eternal creator. Nanak, in company of those, a learner is saved from ill deeds, so do sing virtues of the creator.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਬੀਸ ਬਿਸਵੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
Bīs bisve gur kā man mānai. So sevak parmesur kī gaṯ jānai.
Believing totally in one creator in mind. Such humble servant understands the ways of the creator.

ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਅਨਿਕ ਬਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
So saṯgur jis riḏai har nā▫o. Anik bār gur ka▫o bal jā▫o.
Heart in which the true creator is so remembered. Many times be so enthralled with the creator.

ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
Sarab niḏẖān jī▫a kā ḏāṯā. Āṯẖ pahar pārbarahm rang rāṯā.
Provider to all living and owner of all treasures. Twenty four hours imbued in creator’s color.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਹਿ ਜਨੁ ਜਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥ ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਭਰਮੁ ॥
Barahm mėh jan jan mėh pārbarahm. Ėkėh āp nahī kacẖẖ bẖaram.
Humble resides in the creator and the supreme creator in the humble. Self is one, no doubt about it.

ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਲਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੩॥
Sahas si▫ānap la▫i▫ā na jā▫ī▫ai. Nānak aisā gur badbẖāgī pā▫ī▫ai. ||3||
Cannot be received through thousands of clever tricks. Nanak, such creator is gotten of good fortune.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that those who recognize the true one, will know it to be the eternal creator. Company of such people saves one from ills and so sing the virtues of the creator .

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 18, 3rd sabad describe the duality and existence of the one creator everywhere and in all. Believing brings understanding of the ways of the creator, heart so imbued is enthralled, twenty four hours immersed in the provider and owner of all, such creator and self become indistinguishable in a humble one.

Guru ji conclude that cleverness of many ways does not so provide but the good fortune so enables to receive such creator.
