ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਨਨਹਾਰ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਉਧਰੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥੧॥
Sarab kalā bẖarpūr parabẖ birthā jānanhār. Jā kai simran uḏẖrī▫ai Nānak ṯis balihār. ||1||
Creator has all power and is knowing of suffering. Nanak forever respectfully appreciates, in contemplation of such we are saved.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਜਿਉ ਮੰਦਰ ਕਉ ਥਾਮੈ ਥੰਮਨੁ ॥ ਤਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਅਸਥੰਮਨੁ ॥
Ji▫o manḏar ka▫o thāmai thamman. Ŧi▫o gur kā sabaḏ manėh asthamman.
As a great house is supported by pillars. So the understanding of the creator supports the mind.

ਜਿਉ ਪਾਖਾਣੁ ਨਾਵ ਚੜਿ ਤਰੈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਲਗਤੁ ਨਿਸਤਰੈ ॥
Ji▫o pākẖāṇ nāv cẖaṛ ṯarai. Parāṇī gur cẖaraṇ lagaṯ nisṯarai.
Like the stone traverses water riding in a boat. Person linked to the creator’s feet so traverses.

ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਦੀਪਕ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਗਾਸੁ ॥
Ji▫o anḏẖkār ḏīpak pargās. Gur ḏarsan ḏekẖ man ho▫e bigās.
Like darkness is removed with lamp’s brightness. With visualization of the creator the mind blossoms.

ਜਿਉ ਮਹਾ ਉਦਿਆਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਿਉ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵੈ ॥
Ji▫o mahā uḏi▫ān mėh mārag pāvai. Ŧi▫o sāḏẖū sang mil joṯ paragtāvai.
Just like one finds a path in a great jungle. So in the company of the learned essence of being is displayed.

ਤਿਨ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਛਉ ਧੂਰਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਲੋਚਾ ਪੂਰਿ ॥੩॥
Ŧin sanṯan kī bācẖẖa▫o ḏẖūr. Nānak kī har locẖā pūr. ||3||
Such pious ones, I be like dirt at their feet. Nanak may this longing be fulfilled.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji describe the creator as all powerful and knowing of all. We are saved in respectful contemplation of such and to be so thankful.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 15, 3rd in marvelous analogy descriptions compare the acquisition and receipt of wisdom with common events. Like pillars support a house the creator’s understanding supports the mind, stone does not sink riding a boat and a person enjoined to the creator prevails, darkness vanishes with light of the lamp so the mind brightens with creator’s visualization, finding a path in the jungle is likened to the guidance from the learned.

Guru ji conclude with great respect to the pious as all of mind’s longings are answered.
