Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਤਜਹੁ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸੁਰਿ ਜਨਹੁ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਏਕ ਆਸ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ੧॥
Ŧajahu si▫ānap sur janhu simrahu har har rā▫e. Ėk ās har man rakẖahu Nānak ḏūkẖ bẖaram bẖa▫o jā▫e. ||1||
Good people leave cleverness and contemplate on the creator lord and king. Expect of one creator in the mind; ills, doubt and fear will leave.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਸੁਝੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ
Gur parsāḏ āpan āp sujẖai. Ŧis kī jānhu ṯarisnā bujẖai.
With creator’s blessing, one who so self realizes. Recognize the thirst of such has been quenched.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਹਤ ਸਰਬ ਰੋਗ ਤੇ ਓਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਰਹਤ
Sāḏẖsang har har jas kahaṯ. Sarab rog ṯe oh har jan rahaṯ.
In the company of the pious, says virtues of the creator. Such a person of the creator becomes free of all ills.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੇਵਲ ਬਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰਬਾਨੁ
An▫ḏin kīrṯan keval bakẖ▫yān. Garihsaṯ mėh so▫ī nirbān.
Everyday sings praises of only creator’s virtues. Such in family life is free of worldly traps.

ਏਕ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਟੀਐ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਾ
Ėk ūpar jis jan kī āsā. Ŧis kī katī▫ai jam kī fāsā.
Such as whose hope is on one (creator). Demon noose of such is cut free.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਭੂਖ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਦੂਖ ੪॥
Pārbarahm kī jis man bẖūkẖ. Nānak ṯisėh na lāgėh ḏūkẖ. ||4||
One such in mind yearning for the supreme creator. Nanak such person gets no ills.
ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji say that cleverness is not needed to understand the creator. The linking to one creator removes ills, doubt and fear.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 14, 4th sabad review the mindset of a person so fortunate to link to the creator. Self realizing and so quenches the thirst for knowing, company of the pious and focus on creator’s virtues removes ills, worldly traps so avoided in trust of one creator,


Guru ji conclude that that a mind that has hunger for the creator’s understanding, such does not attract ills.
