ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸੁਖੀ ਬਸੈ ਮਸਕੀਨੀਆ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਤਲੇ ॥ ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਲੇ ॥੧॥
Sukẖī basai maskīnī▫ā āp nivār ṯale. Bade bade ahaʼnkārī▫ā Nānak garab gale. ||1||
The mild mannered live in comfort acting selfless and low. Nanak many bigger than big ego centric, rot in egotism.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਸਹਸ ਖਟੇ ਲਖ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Sahas kẖate lakẖ ka▫o uṯẖ ḏẖāvai. Ŧaripaṯ na āvai mā▫i▫ā pācẖẖai pāvai.
Making hundreds gets up and runs for hundred of thousand. Contentment does not come from accumulating wealth.

ਅਨਿਕ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਕਰੈ ॥ ਨਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮਰੈ ॥
Anik bẖog bikẖi▫ā ke karai. Nah ṯaripṯāvai kẖap kẖap marai.
Many a pleasures experienced in wealth. Contentment does not come and dies in repeated discontentment.

ਬਿਨਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਰਾਜੈ ॥ ਸੁਪਨ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਬ੍ਰਿਥੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਜੈ ॥
Binā sanṯokẖ nahī ko▫ū rājai. Supan manorath barithe sabẖ kājai.
Without contentment none is satisfied. Like chasing dreams, all so done are useless.

ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
Nām rang sarab sukẖ ho▫e. Badbẖāgī kisai parāpaṯ ho▫e.
In creator’s understanding all comfort is found. Such is found by some so fortunate.

ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੫॥
Karan karāvan āpe āp. Saḏā saḏā Nānak har jāp. ||5||
One such is the one to direct or do by self. Nanak always and forever so contemplate the creator.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that mild mannered humble and selfless live in comfort while the ego centric have a life rotten by ego.
Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 12, 5th sabad cite manifestations of greed and contentment. In greed chases hundreds to thousands and splurging in pleasures of wealth. Contentment does not materialize with wealth, enjoyment of worldly pleasures unless there is pious acceptance. Understanding is the source of comfort and blessed few so receive.

Guru ji conclude that the creator so executes all that prevails and one should always contemplate on such.
