ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Salok.
Salok (Core theme of eight sabads/hymns in the Astpadi)

ਸੁਖੀ ਬਸੈ ਮਸਕੀਨੀਆ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਤਲੇ ॥ ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਲੇ ॥੧॥
Sukẖī basai maskīnī▫ā āp nivār ṯale. Bade bade ahaʼnkārī▫ā Nānak garab gale. ||1||
The mild mannered live in comfort acting selfless and low. Nanak many bigger than big ego centric, rot in egotism.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ॥
Asatpaḏī.
Eight stanzas hymn

ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਸੋ ਨਰਕਪਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੁਆਨੁ ॥
Jis kai anṯar rāj abẖimān. So narakpāṯī hovaṯ su▫ān.
One who has the pride of ruling inside. Such hell bound is like a dog.

ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤੁ ॥ ਸੋ ਹੋਵਤ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਜੰਤੁ ॥
Jo jānai mai jobanvanṯ. So hovaṯ bistā kā janṯ.
One who believes in much self beauty. Such is like a worm in manure.

ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਮਵੰਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਵੈ ॥
Āpas ka▫o karamvanṯ kahāvai. Janam marai baho jon bẖarmāvai.
Thinking of self to be called a do gooder. Such is caught in great circle of life and death.

ਧਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਸੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
Ḏẖan bẖūm kā jo karai gumān. So mūrakẖ anḏẖā agi▫ān.
One who finds pride in wealth and land. Such fool is blind and ignorant.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਈਹਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਆਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
Kar kirpā jis kai hirḏai garībī basāvai. Nānak īhā mukaṯ āgai sukẖ pāvai. ||1||
One so blessed with enshrined humility. Nanak such is liberated here finds comfort hereafter.

ESSENCE: In the salok, Guru ji state that mild mannered humble and selfless live in comfort while the ego centric have a life rotten by ego.

Guru Arjan Dev ji in Astpadi 12, 1st sabad decry beliefs of power, beauty, being called do-gooder, pride of wealth and land. All these are of little consequence and are negative metaphorically like a hell bound dog, worm in manure and endless lives-deaths.

Guru ji conclude that ones so graced with humility find liberation for all times.
