Sukhbir may succeed father by month-end

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is all set to execute its long-pending succession plan that would see party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal taking over as the Chief Minister of Punjab from his father Parkash Singh Badal.

Sources in the SAD have confirmed to The Pioneer that the Badal duo discussed the matter with senior BJP leader LK Advani and party president Rajnath Singh on Monday and shared their intention of bringing about a “generation” change sometime during Navratra, which begins on Saturday.

By the time, Parkash would have completed two-and-half years (exactly half the term) as the Chief Minister. SAD sources say Parkash wanted his son to take over so that he had sufficient time to “settle down” and “prepare” for the February 2012 Assembly election.

Sukhbir was appointed his father’s deputy in the Government for the second time on August 10 this year after he won the Jalalabad Assembly constituency bypoll. Earlier, the SAD chief had to resign after he failed to get elected to the State Assembly within six months after being sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister in January this year.

“The Chief Minister wanted his son to take over from him. We do not have any problem with that. It is part of their succession plan. It could not happen earlier because Sukhbir could not meet the requirement of getting elected to the State Assembly,” a senior BJP leader said.

According to reports, the SAD leaders are in favour of Sukhbir’s elevation around Navratri and the BJP leaders have suggested that they tread cautiously. Some BJP leaders have been of the opinion that the Congress was in a tight spot over choosing the successor to YSR Reddy as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after YSR’s tragic death in an air crash.

The YSR loyalists have made the task difficult for the Congress by intensely lobbying in favour of his son Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is a first-time MP. Sources have revealed that the BJP leaders advised to SAD against any “hasty decision” that could provide cushion to the Congress against the trouble it is facing.

The BJP would also press for the seat of the Deputy Chief Minister once Sukhbir is elevated as the Chief Minister.
