Stymied Sikhs still seek site

An Indian religious group wanting to build a Sikh Temple in Hobart believes it is being discriminated against.

Gurdwara Sahib Tasmania already has plans for a temple on vacant land at the top of Cascade Road, South Hobart.

The council has deferred leasing or granting land, saying the preferred site would present parking and access problems for people using Wellesley Park and the nearby Badminton Centre.

Council has agreed to look at other ways of helping, but the chairperson of the group Surinder Mahindroo says there is plenty of other land.

"They can actually allocate a piece of land really for sustainable development of the community I strongly believe that there should be because every other religion has some sort of place except this community," she said.
