Why should we suppress sexual feelings, to progress in spirituality?

I have heard many people saying that sexuality is bad, and it is a hindrance in the path of spirituality. Why is it so?

What do you guys have to say about this subject?

How can a form of reproduction be against spirituality? Isn't that self destructive?

1. Brahmchareeah/abstinence/celibacy....etc is NOT Gurmatt. Its NOT recommended/praised/required for spirituality per se.

2. In fact Gurmatt and GURBANI strongest terms recommends GRISHTEE JEEWAN..Married LIFE in FAMILY environemnt for maximum Spiritual Growth.

3. EXCESSIVE....OVER INDULGENCE..is what is meant by BHOGGEE....and that can mean Excessive EATING...leading to OBESITY..and a Host of related health problems ( 90 % of world's RICH population is evidence of this )
a miniscule amount of Herion/Morphine is medicine ( prescribed in surgery/pain etc) BUT a BHOGGEE will become an ADDICT..and suffer the dire consequences..
A reasonable amount of MAYA...cash is necessary..BUT a BHOGGEE who makes MAYA his sole and only concern..lies..cheats..robs..murders..for it ...to AMASS IT..becomes a BHOGGEE and suffers the ROG...the anxiety attacks...the terrors and nightmares...and whatever else..
A reasonable amount of SEX is required for a Happy Healthy Family life/procreation..children..future generations...but a BHOGGEE will cause break up of his family..even contract diseases like aids/etc and may end up in life sentence prison for rape etc..
A small amount of Sugar sweetens the coffee...BHOGGEE will consume vast amounts and end up Diabetic...and may lose his legs..
A small controlled fire is vital for cooking.....an ARSONIST (BHOGGEE) will burn down buildings and cause loss of life and properties

The LIST is endless..

GURMATT is in favour of CONTROL....
BHOGGEE is in favour of running riot....

The CHOICE IS YOURS....Burn the Candle at BOTH ENDS..and in the MIDDLE....OR..Control....:up: ( NOT SUPPRESSION ):D;)

?

Exactly. It is self destructive. But then why do we have to suppress those feelings?

Dear Khalsa Ji,

Guru Sahib has asked we Sikhs to live like a house holder and perform all the duties that are natural part of houehold. *******ion is any form is not the trait of a Sikh.

Spiritual people do not have to suppress any natural and positive attribute of human form, moderation is their disposition.

Only those suppress who are *******ed and pretend to be spiritual.

With love and respect for all.

I agree with the above.
But to give birth to a child, even a single sexual intercourse is enough.
So is sex just about procreation according to gurbani?

You say "reasonable amount of sex" is good.
So how much according to gurbani is reasonable amount of sex?

I know in gurbani, we dont find much about sex and its implications on human behaviour. But what are your personal views on this issue?

I know that excess of everything is bad, and same goes with sex.

But here i am asking that how does excessive sex effects us in the path of spirituality?
For example
A person likes to have sex with his wife, daily or may be twice a day.
We may conclude this excessive.
But how does this excessive sexual behavior becomes a hindrance in spirituality?

You know sadhu ji,

Gurbani is "silent" on many aspects of sexuality. And it is explicit when it does speak about sexuality. So far you have heard in this thread that moderation and control of lust is the key. Finding balance as a householder is the goal. There is some examples in Guruji that stands out in my mind as a good example of this point. These occur in shabads where Guruji refers to adulterers or prostitutes:

ਚੋਰਾ ਜਾਰਾ ਰੰਡੀਆ ਕੁਟਣੀਆ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕੀ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣੁ ॥
choraa jaaraa randdeeaa kuttaneeaa dheebaan || vaedheenaa kee dhosathee vaedheenaa kaa khaan ||
Thieves, adulterers,
prostitutes and pimps, make friendships with the unrighteous, and eat with the unrighteous. (Ang 790)

But you know that in the shabad the point made is not a speech against prostitutes or even against adultery per se. The point made is that something negative and repressive happens when a person dwells in the life-style of adulterers, prostitutes and pimps -- that person becomes spiritually degraded. dhuramath madh jo peevathae bikhalee path kamalee || Those fools, who drink in the wine of evil-mindedness, become the husbands of prostitutes. (Ang 399)

Another example,

chithavath paap n aalak aavai ||
The mortal does not hesitate to think about sin.

baesuaa bhajath kishh neh saramaavai ||
He is not ashamed to spend time with
prostitutes.

saaro dhinas majooree karai ||
He works all day long,

har simaran kee vaelaa bajar sir parai ||1||
but when it is time to remember the Lord, then a heavy stone falls on his head. ||1|| (Ang 1143)

Guruji does not lecture in this Shabad, but points out that the price one pays is high when one is not mindful of the toll of wanton sexuality.

Sikhism specifically targets Kaam or sexual OBSESSION being bad for one's spirituality.

If one is obsessed with sex and on see's the opposite sex as a form of sexual gratification then that will eventually be destructive.

Sikhism says nothing bad about sex as a form of expression of love.

Obsession of any form is bad, be it food, sex, video games etc. It is this that Sikhism targets.

....and no sex in Sikhism is not only for reproduction....what then will be the case with say a couple that cannot have children? Are they eternal sinners. NO. Sikhism is not like Catholocism (although there are lements withis Sikhi that are trying to make it like that at the moment).
