The issue had come up for discussion in the core committee meeting of the Akali Dal late last evening where SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar was assigned the job of resolving the crisis.</span></p><p><span style="color: Navy"></span></p><p><span style="color: Navy">The SGPC had tried to remove this history board on the very first day that created tension as the Damdami Taksal men resisted the move. A clash was averted following the intervention by some leaders. This board also mentions the names of Bhai Amrik Singh, General Shahbeg Singh and Baba Thara Singh.The Sant Samaj headed by Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma had submitted a memorandum to Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh yesterday taking the hard stand that the name of the memorial could not be changed now. The logic advanced was that this was in accordance with the resolution passed by the SGPC itself last year after which the construction of the memorial was entrusted to the Taksal. </span></p><p><span style="color: Navy"></span></p><p><span style="color: Navy">It may be mentioned that it was originally the Akali Dal which had adopted a resolution in October, 1984 to raise memorial in the memory of the martyrs of Operation Bluestar.However, Bharatiya Janata Party, the alliance partner of the Akali Dal, had first raised objections to the raising of this memorial and has now strongly protested against naming it after Sant Bhindranwale.</span></p><p><span style="color: Navy"></span></p><p><span style="color: Navy">It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has assured in the Assembly that this memorial would be a peace memorial in the memory of the innocents killed during Operation Bluestar.However, Baba Dhumma succeeded in using the situation while naming the memorial after his predecessor in the Taksal. He had been maintaining all these years that it was his mission to raise memorial in the memory of Sant Bhindranwale. Some years back, Badal succeeded in cultivating him along with Sant Samaj. Sant Samaj has been supporting the Akali Dal in various elections. </span></p><p><span style="color: Navy"></span></p><p><span style="color: Navy">Baba Dhumma had come under strong criticism for toeing Badal line. Badal is known to have used almost every leader to his advantage. However, it now seems that it is Baba Dhumma who outsmarted him. He succeeded in raising the memorial by maintaining good relations with Badal without which it would not have been possible.Some more Sikh organisations are likely to submit representations to Akal Takht chief against removing the name plaque. The ball is now in the court of Akal Takht. </span></p><p><span style="color: Navy"></span></p><p><span style="color: Navy">The Akal Takht Jathedar has summoned a meeting of the five high priests on May 15 to resolve the issue. The high priests normally wait for the signal from the SGPC chief. However, it is now being felt that in case of any confrontation on this issue, the Damdami Taksal might once again become the rallying point for the radicals.
