SGPC, Damdami Taksal on collision course

Taksal chief refuses to remove engravings with Bhindranwale’s name on walls of Bluestar memorial

Perneet Singh/TNS

Amritsar, May 2

The stalemate between the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Damdami Taksal over the Operation Bluestar Memorial controversy continues as a meeting held between the two sides here today remained inconclusive.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, Golden Temple head granthi Giani Mal Singh and SGPC executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta were also present during the deliberations.

Sources said Makkar raised an objection to Taksal’s move to dedicate the memorial to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and engraving his name at different points while terming it as “a direct interference” in the SGPC affairs. He said the boards and the marble on which his name had been inscribed should be removed.

Talking to The Tribune, Makkar said they would not tolerate any intervention in the SGPC functioning. He said the SGPC was in charge of the memorial’s management and it would be run as per the ‘maryada’ of the Golden Temple, which was a symbol of communal harmony and peace.

On the other hand, Taksal chief Harnam Singh Khalsa has opposed any such move. He said they had strongly resented the SGPC plan to remove the board with Bhindranwale’s name. He said the SGPC had been warned not to tamper with the memorial. He warned that if any such move was initiated, it may cause a “division in the community, for which the SGPC chief will be responsible”. He said they will present a memorandum to the Akal Takht Jathedar on May 6, urging him that the memorial’s history should not be distorted.

He said the Sant Samaj and Nihang outfits would take out a march from Chowk Mehta and reach Akal Takht in the form of a procession on May 6. He said there was widespread resentment in the Sikh Sangat over the SGPC’s move to remove the wall clock having Bhindranwale’s photograph. He alleged that Makkar’s attitude at a meeting held earlier was “dictatorial”.

The Taksal chief has called a meeting to decide the future course of action over the suggestions being given by the SGPC. Though the meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere, no decision could be reached about the contentious issue.

The opening of Operation Bluestar Memorial on April 27 here had sparked a row after it came to light that the Taksal had dedicated it to Bhindranwale. The SGPC cried foul play contending it was kept in the dark about it.

The Taksal had inscribed Bhindranwale's name on six spots, besides putting up a wall clock with his photograph. In a damage-control mode, the SGPC had turned around the 'golak' with his name on it and also removed the wall clock. However, his name is still intact on five plaques outside the memorial.

It is very strange that so called follower of sikh gurus are practising hate by decorating the person like jarnel singh bhindrawala. Though, there can be agreement of setting up a memorial for blue star operation as a reminder to the sikh community and all those who carry shardha in guru nanak that if we are not prepared to be alert and not ready to make sacrifice and scare of the people who are mighty either it is government or the people like jarnel singh bhindrawala whoes hands are tainted with innocent blood , to whom the sgpc was subservient; to whom other sikh bodies were not able to control or even request him to stop blood shed of innocent people of punjab ; who could not be persuaded not to sacrilege the holyness of the harminder sahib ji ; there will not be any meaning left in sarbat ka bhala ; brotherhood and love for god which could not be practiced without loving all its creatures as propagated by all the sikh gurus

Even in death he's caused so much division amongst Sikhs. I don't think that was his aim. In fact his aim was unity of Sikhs. :(

I don't think there is any division among Sikhs on this matter. No one from amongst the Sikhs is protesting to get the name of Sant Bhindrawale deleted from the memorial. It is just the government machinery which is trying to make a mount of a molehill.
Haters of Sikh panth may hate, it doesn't matter.

Efforts on to avert confrontation between Taksal, Punjab govt over memorial

Tuesday, May, 07 2013 - 17:27

By Jagtar Singh-

CHANDIGARH:
Efforts are on to avert confrontation between Damdami Taksal led Sant Samaj on one side and the Punjab government and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on the other on the issue of the Operation Bluestar memorial in the Golden Temple complex that has been named after Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale leading to the present controversy.

According to highly places sources, as a way out, the board put up by the Damdami Taksal in the parkarma depicting the history of the memorial could be removed while keeping the marble name plaque intact. The issue had come up for discussion in the core committee meeting of the Akali Dal late last evening where SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar was assigned the job of resolving the crisis.

The SGPC had tried to remove this history board on the very first day that created tension as the Damdami Taksal men resisted the move. A clash was averted following the intervention by some leaders. This board also mentions the names of Bhai Amrik Singh, General Shahbeg Singh and Baba Thara Singh. The Sant Samaj headed by Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma had submitted a memorandum to Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh yesterday taking the hard stand that the name of the memorial could not be changed now. The logic advanced was that this was in accordance with the resolution passed by the SGPC itself last year after which the construction of the memorial was entrusted to the Taksal.

It may be mentioned that it was originally the Akali Dal which had adopted a resolution in October, 1984 to raise memorial in the memory of the martyrs of Operation Bluestar. However, Bharatiya Janata Party, the alliance partner of the Akali Dal, had first raised objections to the raising of this memorial and has now strongly protested against naming it after Sant Bhindranwale.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has assured in the Assembly that this memorial would be a peace memorial in the memory of the innocents killed during Operation Bluestar. However, Baba Dhumma succeeded in using the situation while naming the memorial after his predecessor in the Taksal. He had been maintaining all these years that it was his mission to raise memorial in the memory of Sant Bhindranwale. Some years back, Badal succeeded in cultivating him along with Sant Samaj. Sant Samaj has been supporting the Akali Dal in various elections.

Baba Dhumma had come under strong criticism for toeing Badal line. Badal is known to have used almost every leader to his advantage. However, it now seems that it is Baba Dhumma who outsmarted him. He succeeded in raising the memorial by maintaining good relations with Badal without which it would not have been possible. Some more Sikh organisations are likely to submit representations to Akal Takht chief against removing the name plaque. The ball is now in the court of Akal Takht.

The Akal Takht Jathedar has summoned a meeting of the five high priests on May 15 to resolve the issue. The high priests normally wait for the signal from the SGPC chief. However, it is now being felt that in case of any confrontation on this issue, the Damdami Taksal might once again become the rallying point for the radicals. The government would like to avoid that situation also.

I find it quite funny that SGPC members all work in the vicinity of Harmander Sahib, yet they were unaware of the developments, it must have been like a comedy show, where someone stays on a look out for certain SGPC members, then on an alarm somehow cover the spots where Jarnail Singh's names appears!

But on the whole it shows the sorry state of affair in the politicized version of "Sikhi".

Bhindranwale row: BJP reiterates stand on memorial, remove controversial objects

Monday, May, 13 2013 - 13:20

BATHINDA:
Punjab BJP president Kamal Sharma once again while reiterating his stand on Bluestar memorial said his party will give ample time to coalition partner Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to remove all the objects glorifying Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindrnawale from the memorial.

Sharma said after BJP had expressed its reservations on the memorial, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee had removed some of the controversial objects but there are few inscriptions on marble slabs.Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has set up a committee to resolve the issue, but a few radicals have been trying to create hurdles, he added.

He said, radicalism is detrimental not only to interests of Punjab but the entire nation.Sharma further said Punjab has already paid heavy price for the violence.Meanwhile, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa had Parkash Singh Badal for playing politics of religion and appeasing the radical elements to meet his narrow political ends. He warned Punjabis against dangerous designs of SAD.

He asked Badal if he wanted to prove his secular credentials he should set up a ‘peace memorial’ in the memory of 33,000 innocent Punjabis who lost lives due to terrorism. He said religious card played by Badal in the early 80s was responsible for spurt of terrorism in the state.

The executive committee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee at its meeting last week preferred to skip over the controversy over naming the Operation Bluestar memorial after Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Sikh clergy buy time, to seek views of scholars on Bluestar memorial

Defer matter to next meeting to be held after June 6

Wednesday, May, 15 2013 - 18:18

AMRITSAR:
In a calculated move, the Sikh high priests today decided to defer any decision relating the removing name of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale from newly constructed 1984 operation blue star memorial at Golden Temple complex.

The Sikh clergy that met at the Akal Takht under the headship of Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh stated that they would seek more views from all Sikh circles including Sikh scholars and organizations before taking any decision on the matter.

Jathedars also stated that they will take final decision after consultations with the Sikh panth only after the June 6, the anniversary of the operation blue star. Jathedars also warned the political leaders and general public from making any derogatory comments or unnecessary statements on the issue. "It is the internal matter of the Sikhs and no political leader or party should rake this issue for their vested interests and refrain from misleading the people’’, said Giani Gurbachan Singh.

The Five Jathedars from the Sikh Takhts took part in the meeting and discussed the matter in details but thye failed to reach any final decision on the matter. The issue relating inscription of separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale’s name and plates describing historical references to him at the memorial had snow balled into a major controversy. The Sikh clergy, realizing the depth of the matter has convened a meeting of the Sikh five head priests at Akal Takht but have bought more time to take any decision regarding the matter.

Sant Samaj chief and head of Damdami Taksal Baba Harnam Singh had toughened the stand on any attempt to erase the name and plates. He held a high level meeting of the Taksal and Samaj at his headquarters at Chowk Mehta and then he led a high profile delegation to Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, asking him to intervene, following which the meeting fo the Sikh clergy was planned.

It is to mention that the Memorial was inaugurated in a simple and low-lying ceremony last fortnight but the name of Bhindrawale was inscribed, apart from a clock with his photo fixed on the wall and thename was also written on the Golak besides a plate was installed describing the history of the operation blue star and how the Army conducted operation, 'killing many innocents’. This was objected because the ruling SAD (B) and the SGPC had been maintaining throughout that the memorial will not be dedicated to one person but to all those who died during the operation.

SAD (B) alliance partner BJP had been most vocal saying that such an act would undermine the religious harmony as it aims to glorify the terrorists who had taken shelter in the holy shrine and were flushedout by the Army. SGPC Chief Avtar Singh Makkar first expressed ignorance of the matter and later said that the name will be removed but the Taksal and radical forces have objected to it and openly stated that any such attempt to remove Bhindrawale’s name will be challenged.

The work on the memorial, which had generated lot of hue and cry after its foundation stone was laid last year, was completed last month and the building was thrown open for the devotees after an Ardas (prayers) of Akhand Path. The memorial was proposed by SGPC as there had been demand from various Sikh quarters to have such a structure and its work was entrusted upon Taksal and Baba Dhumma had been looking after the work.

Now as the matter has reached Akal Takht, the ruling SAD (B) and SGPC itself is in the tight spot and deliberations are on to find out some way out from the controversy.

Bold step must to end Bhindranwale row

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh's assertion that nobody should interfere in internal affairs of the Sikhs is highly egoistic, dictatorial and contrary to the Sikh ethos.

The jathedar's statement came after the Sikh clergy's May 15 meeting, which failed to resolve the controversy over the inscription of militant preacher Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale's name at the Operation Bluestar memorial in the Golden Temple complex.

Darbar Sahib is the highest place of respect and worship for the whole humanity, particularly Sikhs. It is open from all sides. It represents the humility and tolerance of followers of the Sikh faith.

A majority of us, including political and religious leaders, read the Bani (Guru's word) but do not adopt it in our everyday life. Knowledge should be discussed in the open. The Sikh religion does not permit gagging of thought and expression. The order against making any statement about the controversy in the public or before the media is violative of the sacred script of Adi Granth.

If Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar had made a wrong commitment to Damdami Taksal leaders under some misconception, then as a devoted and true Sikh, he should admit his fault and rectify the error.

The whole world will admire his moral courage and he would emerge a stronger, cleaner and wiser leader. But if he does not show courage, he will add to his own embarrassment and also cast a cloud over Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, who had declared in the assembly that no name would be written and no individual be highlighted on the memorial.

People want that Darbar Sahib should remain a place of peace and spirituality. The doublespeak, narrow vision and lack of open discussion will compound the problem. Only a courageous and bold decision can solve it. An escapist approach will make things even more complicated.

Some very interesting statement here to read.Let us take a few points and look at reality, rather than be emotional.

Who was Bindrawala?A dropout of of the village school at Rode from std 5.came under the wing of the Chowk mehta group, "studied "what ever, and suddenly promoted as "Brahm Giani." A good rustic preacher, who would probably have done much more good for the community by staying as the rustic preacher he was.he could have even brought many non Sikhs to the faith, had he remained the rustic preacher he was.

He started dabbling into politics and moved into Harmander sahib. The authorities there could not stop him,nor had the guts to reason, went silent and allowed him to function.

I don't know if he was directly or indirectly involved in the killings, or these were simply committed in his name. But what I do know is that he never helped himself and the Sikhs community when he strated giving statements like ..."only 35 hindus to a Sikh".Such statemnst were unecesary, and neither helped nor were reflection of any insightfulness into what was coming, what he was driving to and what could happen.BINGO, blindly the destruction came.Irrespective of who was wrong who was right and how wrongly the whole issue was handled by the powers in Delhi.Blanket killings took place of the most innocent; until truth merged with falsehood from every side.Instead of peace and peace co-existence destruction took place for all and for some more.If Bhindawala was such a brahm giani , his knowledge would have forstalled the destruction, but his ego took over too...to fortifiy and FIGHT, and constantly dare for an invasion.

SECOND

Who are the damdami takssal?PRACTICALLY NO BODY nor has any standing in past Sikh history. They are a jatha from Chowk Mehta-Bhindra.They hijacked the title damdami taksaal since 1977 without any factual evidence nor authority.Bhindrawalas martyrdom gave them the feul they were yearning and seeking and manipulated his martyrdom. With that point in their favour first they rode high until they over blew the bhindrawal icon into such a size, that Sikhs emotional of the destruction and attack did not pause to think...hold on we should also analyse realistically...our own part in all this mess. But no, the emotions ran and ran ..until ..we see only one icon Bhindrawal and cease to reason and be real over it.

Once that phase by this Jatha was over, they slowly manipulated the introduction of the dasam granth, which now holds central to their ideology.Talking of their ideology, they do NOT prescribe to the central Sikh maryada.Their Bau ji [gurbachan singh a very highly ego'd individual]has introduced a book of their own maryada. They now because of their alledged association with damdama claim they practice the original maryada!!!!

It can get no further from facts and the truth! They condone the seating of the dasam granth and they also want the continuation of this granth within Sikhs.

They do not believe in the central Sikh maryada...how do they expect to be allowed in the Harmander complex?Thy have an agenda, once they get a foot hold within the Harmander, they will begin their own practises....

They do not want build the memorial at Chowk Mehta, why?lesse people will travel to chowk Mehta, thus less donations will be given. At harmander, if they controlled this memorial they will get more moneies coming in.That is their planning in the long term.

My view is NO fringe group should be allowed to operate in the Harmander complex nilly willy. The SGPC as an elected body should NOT allow any groups in.This belongs to the panth and only the panthic elected body remain in charge.Otherwise we will have nilly willy maryadas going on.

The Harmamder sahib was built by the Gurus and it should remain as it is without adding silly buildings. It is ONE BIG gurduara and should remain so.

My reading leads me to conclude this Dhumma and his group has a greater agenda than we see.Their underhand work at the memeorial points into that direction too.Thier own falsely alledged history undermines the total ONE panth concept.

For what ever weakness the SGOC has it is our elcetd body it should be the only one that makes decisions and decide in the Harmnder sahib.

In 1984, the Chowk Mehta Jatha took over the complex with Bhindrawala, what destruction followed is for all of us to see.We cannot repeat the same mistake twice.

Gurmukho, think abt it.
